7 Calm Masterpieces to Soothe Anxious Hearts

On sleepless nights, it's better to step away from the stimulating screens and sounds, especially when your mind is racing.

Slow and simple music relaxes you with a steady rhythm similar to your breath and heartbeat. The more tranquil and repetitive a piece is, the more it calms the mind.

From the subtlety of Debussy's ‘Clair de Lune’ to the spaciousness of Satie's ‘Gymnopédies’, and lullabies reminiscent of Brahms and Schubert — here are seven pieces to help you unwind and drift off to sleep.

Debussy ‘Clair de Lune’

Debussy ‘Clair de Lune’

This is the third piece in Debussy's ‘Suite Bergamasque’, inspired by the poem ‘Clair de Lune’ by poet Verlaine. It represents French Impressionist piano music.

Instead of clear melodies, it paints landscapes with harmonic colors and resonances. The use of the pedal creates a dreamlike atmosphere, like moonlight shimmering on water.

It's incredibly calm and drowsy, perfect for winding down before sleep or for contemplation on a cloudy day. Lower the volume and let it wash over you.

Satie ‘Gymnopédie No. 1’

Satie ‘Gymnopédie No. 1’

This is the first of three ‘Gymnopédies’ composed by Satie at the age of twenty-two, named after the ancient Spartan festival ‘Gymnopaedia’. It is recognized as a precursor to minimalism due to its simplicity in contrast to the flashy music of its time.

Like the instruction ‘slowly and sadly’, the same harmony is repeated slowly, leaving wide spaces in between. The unadorned simplicity evokes deep resonance.

The empty spaces loosen the mind, making it perfect for relaxation, sleep, and gentle focus.

Brahms ‘Lullaby’

Brahms ‘Lullaby’

This song was gifted by Brahms to celebrate the birth of his friend Bertha Faber's second child, and it is the most famous lullaby in the world. Originally a song, it is now loved in various instrumental arrangements.

On a softly swaying triple beat, a warm melody gently repeats. The simple yet incredibly cozy melody offers comfort to the listener.

It soothes the heart and invites sleep, making it a good choice not only for children but also for sleepless adults.

Schubert ‘Serenade’

Schubert ‘Serenade’

This piece is included in Schubert's ‘Die schöne Müllerin’, which was published posthumously, and is set to a poem by Rellstab. It's a love song sung from the window of a lover at night, known as a ‘serenade’.

Over a gentle accompaniment reminiscent of a guitar, a tender melody flows. It embodies Schubert's unique blend of beauty and melancholy.

The poignant yet peaceful melody helps to release the tension of the day. Even in arrangements for violin and cello, the essence remains vivid.

Fauré ‘Pavane’

Fauré ‘Pavane’

This elegant orchestral piece by Fauré draws on the form of the slow dance known as ‘Pavane’ from old court music. Although there is a choral version, it is often performed as an orchestral piece.

The flute introduces a pristine melody, followed gracefully by the strings. The entire piece flows with restrained beauty and elegance.

The slow and composed flow helps to calm the mind. It is well-suited as a backdrop for rest or contemplation.

Ravel ‘Pavane for a Dead Princess’

Ravel ‘Pavane for a Dead Princess’

This piano piece by Ravel, written during his studies at the Paris Conservatory, was later arranged for orchestra. Ravel explained that it expresses nostalgia for the old Spanish court rather than being about the death of a specific princess.

The horn begins with a faint melody. Over the slow rhythm of the Pavane, elegant and nostalgic feelings gently unfold.

With a blend of serene comfort and poignancy, it's perfect for winding down before bed or when you want to calm your mind.

Bach ‘Goldberg Variations’ Aria

Bach ‘Goldberg Variations’ Aria

Bach's ‘Goldberg Variations’ were written for Count Keyserlingk, who was suffering from insomnia, and were played nightly by his harpsichordist Goldberg. It begins with the theme ‘Aria’ and is followed by thirty variations.

The elegantly decorated melody flows above a calm bass. The neat and balanced structure helps to organize the mind.

Like a birth myth, it resonates beautifully with the peace of deep night. Glenn Gould’s two recordings of this piece are particularly famous, so give them a listen for comparison.

It's best to turn off the lights and let the music play softly. If you naturally drift into sleep, that's the goal of this music.

If you set a timer, the music will stop on its own, allowing you to sleep without worrying about turning it off.
