There’s a Century of Kunming Interwoven in a Loop Around Cuihu

The area around Cuihu has a rich historical density that makes it too important to just stroll around the lake. To the west, Jiangwutang of the Yunnan Army showcases modern military education, while the Yunnan Normal University campus to the north displays the exhibitions and teachers of Southwest Associated University. Between Yuanming Pavilion and the bookstores and cafes in Wanhua Street, remnants of the old city walls and schools can be seen, and to the south, Kunming Old Street leads to the Victory Memorial Hall and traditional business streets.

This guide has selected parks, museums, universities, and historical streets that can be connected by walking around Cuihu. Please note that museums might be closed on Mondays or may require real-name reservations, and university access policies for outsiders may vary. Be sure not to confuse the exteriors of old buildings with the current shop decorations, and check the original purposes and construction dates on signboards. Mornings are suitable for exhibitions, while afternoons work well for mixing indoors and outdoor spaces like alleys and parks to avoid the highland sun and rain.

By walking this route, one can see that Kunming's modern history is spread across schools, streets, and parks rather than centralized in a massive monument. The yellow building of Jiangwutang, the classrooms and memorials of Southwest Associated University, the living shops of Yuanming Pavilion, and the business spaces of Kunming Old Street all connect different eras. Cuihu naturally slows down the pace of historical exploration, becoming a resting point for both tourists and citizens.

When recording exhibition descriptions, focus on the functions of the places rather than just collecting names of individuals. When visiting universities and religious sites, ensure that classes, worships, and local traffic are not disturbed, and do not enter private properties in alleys without permission. On days when facilities are closed, it’s better to change to an exterior walk and avoid forcing in distant facilities like the Yunnan Provincial Museum. Ending the walk at Kunming Old Street or Nanping Street will also make dining and subway access easier.
