Visit to the Abandoned Temples from Beopcheonsaji to Heungbeopsaji in Wonju

A journey to explore the traces of Buddhist culture in the Namhan River through stone pagodas, stupas, and temples.

In the southwestern part of Wonju, there are temple sites where the buildings are gone but one can guess their scale from the pagodas, stone carvings, platforms, and excavation traces. Beopcheonsaji and Geodonsa show the status of a large temple connected to the transportation of the Namhan River, while Heungbeopsa evokes thoughts of the Goryeo Buddhist network through its remaining stone pagodas and steles. Observing empty spaces rather than completed structures is essential at these abandoned sites.

Ippseoksaji, Yeongwonsaji, Sangwonsaji, Gukhyungsaji, and Bomunsa are currently active mountain temples that allow visitors to compare how Buddhist architecture and worship spaces are used following visits to the abandoned sites. Sangwonsaji and Yeongwonsaji are located deep in Chiaksan Mountain, making them more challenging to hike, whereas Bomunsa in the city is easily accessible. Let's not group the three abandoned sites in Buronmyeon and the mountain temples in Chiaksan on the same day, but separate them into southwestern and mountain temple explorations.

Beopheonsaji

Remnants of a large temple site can be found in Buronmyeon near the Namhan River, where you can see the Daegwangguksa Pagoda Stele and excavation remains. By connecting the locations of the buildings and stone relics in this expansive area, one can infer the scale and transportation significance of the temple during the Goryeo Dynasty.

Wonju Geodonsaji

The wide temple site has remnants of a three-story stone pagoda, the main hall foundation, and the Buddha's pedestal, making it an excellent location to read the central axis of the temple. When viewed alongside Beopcheonsaji, the relationship between the Buddhist culture in Buronmyeon and the transportation via the Namhan River becomes clearer. During your visit, focus on observing the central axis of the three-story stone pagoda and the foundation of the main hall, and check outdoor viewing, agricultural road access, and weather information beforehand for a better understanding of the site.

Wonju Heungbeopsa Three-Story Stone Pagoda

This abandoned site in the fields of Jijeongmyeon features a three-story stone pagoda and traces of the temple. By checking the information boards regarding the transfer of other relics to museums, visitors can contemplate the relationship between on-site preservation and previous exhibitions. Focus on estimating the range of the three-story stone pagoda and the old temple site, and confirm agricultural land protection, parking, and relic transfer information before departure for a more accurate understanding of the site.

Ipseoksa

Located deep within the Chiaksan Mountain, this temple offers encounters with rocks, stone heritage, and a mountain landscape. The steep hike to access this site allows one to feel the different location compared to visits to abandoned sites in flat areas.

Bomunsa

Situated near the city center of Wonju, this temple is easily accessible, making it a great addition to a short itinerary focused on Buddhist culture. Unlike the deep mountain temples, visitors can compare how worship and faith continue within an urban living space. During the visit, focus on the relationship between the temple buildings and the urban area, and check the service times, parking, and etiquette information beforehand for a better understanding of the site.

Yeongwonsa

This temple is nestled in a deep valley and mountain paths in the southern part of Chiaksan. With a historical connection to Yeongwonsanseong, the exploration requires sufficient travel time and preparation beyond just a light visit. During your visit, concentrate on understanding the location of the southern Chiaksan mountain temple and Yeongwonsanseong, and check road conditions, access regulations, weather, and sunset information before departure for a more accurate understanding of the site.

Sangwonsa

Perched high on Chiaksan, this mountain temple is well-known for its pheasant legend and tales of the bell. Due to the challenging access, visitors should plan the entire hiking experience rather than focusing solely on the temple. The forest surrounding the summit and the temple buildings create a unique atmosphere. During the visit, concentrate on the pheasant legend and the experiences of high-altitude mountain temples, and check long-distance hiking, access restrictions, water, and weather information before departure for a more accurate understanding of the site.

Gukhyungsa

Located at the foot of Chiaksan and close to the city center of Wonju, this temple provides relatively easy access to forest paths and temple buildings. When deep mountain temple access feels daunting, this serves as an alternative to experience both Buddhist culture and nature together. During the visit, focus on the temple buildings near the city and the forest walks, and check service times, parking, and crowd information for hikers before departure to understand the nature of the site more accurately.

At the abandoned sites, one needs the imagination to envision what is not visible. By connecting the locations of the stone pagodas, the platforms of the main hall, and the orientations of the stupas and steles, one can see how a once-grand temple, now covered in weeds, transformed into a gathering place for people and goods. Active mountain temples exemplify the continuity of religion and highlight the differences between restored ruins and living spaces.

Temple sites often lack shade and facilities, and access areas can change due to excavations and maintenance. In summer, it's advisable to bring hats and water, and in winter, windproof gear. When visiting mountain temples, be sure to observe quietly so as not to disturb religious services, and check access regulations for Sangwonsaji and Yeongwonsaji. Since original artifacts may be housed in different museums, confirming the status of previous exhibits and restorations from on-site information boards can enhance the accuracy of your exploration.
