When viewing Ulsan merely as an industrial city, it’s easy to overlook the unique urban structure where the bamboo groves of Taehwa River coexist with coastal forests of the East Sea, city art galleries, and traditional Onggi Village. Taehwa River National Garden showcases the process of the river returning to an ecological space after being damaged by industrialization, while Daewangam Park reveals the face of Dong-gu sculpted by the sea and pine forests. Adding Ulsan Museum and the Ulsan Municipal Art Museum connects the timeline from the area’s pre-industrial history to its current cultural city status.

This list highlights eight places for first-time visitors to Ulsan to quickly grasp the character of the city. Since the central area and Dong-gu, Ulsan-gun are distanced from each other, it is advisable to divide visits between the Taehwa River-Nam-gu area and the Daewangam-Dong-gu area, or to Onggi Village. Taehwa River National Garden

This is Ulsan's representative ecological space, where bamboo groves, gardens, wetlands, and walking paths extend along both sides of Taehwa River. By experiencing the light and breeze of the Ten-Mile Bamboo Grove and comparing seasonal gardens, one can see how the river has been restored as a public space amidst an industrial city. Note that on event days, certain paths and parking may be altered.

Daewangam Park

This is Dong-gu’s representative park where you can explore the coastline with rocky islands and a suspension bridge after passing through a pine forest. As you walk from the entrance to Daewangam, the atmosphere of the forest and the sea changes significantly, and on days with high waves, the power of the rocky terrain becomes more evident. Please do not venture beyond the railings or onto the wet rocks.

Ulsan Grand Park

This is a large park in the urban center of Ulsan equipped with expansive green spaces, walking paths, seasonal gardens, and recreational facilities. Instead of trying to see the entire area at once, it's best to focus on specific areas such as the Rose Garden, Ecological Travel Center, or Walking Festival to reduce travel burdens. The operating hours for paid facilities and free park areas differ, so check the admission times separately.

Ulsan Museum

This museum explains Ulsan’s history from prehistoric times to industrialization through local artifacts and industrial materials. Viewing the Bangudae Petroglyphs, ancient relics, and the growth of the automobile, shipbuilding, and petrochemical industries provides a three-dimensional understanding of the cityscape. This city art museum introduces contemporary art and experimental media works. This traditional culture space in Uljoo features Onggi workshops, a museum, kilns, and village scenery. Starting your first trip to Ulsan at Taehwa River, followed by museums and parks, then moving to the sea is a great way to understand the city’s evolution. If time is short, consider combining the National Garden and Ulsan Museum; if you can dedicate a full day, add either Daewangam Park or Onggi Village to your itinerary. Seonam Lake Park and Ulsan Grand Park serve as a pause to feel the local daily life amid well-known tourist spots.

In Ulsan, distances between districts and counties can be quite long and traffic volumes on industrial roads are high. Plan for commuting congestion and bus schedules, not just straight-line distances on a map. The coastal areas are windier than the urban center, and park and garden seasonal events may result in parking restrictions. It’s safer to set the last admission time for indoor facilities first and then adjust your plans for outdoor locations.
