A Collection of Ridge Hiking Courses That Leave Lasting Impressions
National ridge courses to enjoy long views of mountain ranges and high-altitude scenery
When hiking along ridges, the journey along the mountain range tends to be more vividly remembered than just reaching the summit. Each step changes the view as you move past openings in the forest, through meadows connecting peaks, and gaze upon distant layers of mountains. This list gathers actual courses where the scenery along the ridge is more distinct, rather than focusing solely on the quickest route to the top. Some routes differ in departure and descent points, so it's essential to consider the method of travel and estimated time as well.
Having an open view also means being fully exposed to sunlight, wind, and potential thunderstorms. Even when it’s calm below in the forest, strong winds can prevail in the highlands, and summer cumulus clouds can develop quickly. The basic plan is to reach the ridge early in the morning and descend before afternoon convective rain begins. If you hear thunder or see dark clouds approaching, it’s wise to move away from high peaks, isolated trees, or metal railings, and choose the nearest safe exit route.
The courses range from short paths offering highland views to long routes requiring a full day, including rocky ridges. Consider the overall ascent, trail conditions, and distances to escape routes along with the numerical distance indicated. Routes like the one connecting Daechongbong from Haenggyeong and the rocky ridges of Worak Mountain are suited for experienced hikers and differ in character from typical summer outings. Choose a course that allows you a bit of leeway compared to your recent hiking experiences, and plan to exit any risk zones at least two hours before sunset. Knowing where to turn back along the ridge is also crucial.

On the ridge, shade is scarce, making it more challenging to find resting spots compared to flat terrain. Instead of merely relying on hats and sunscreen, it's better to prepare lightweight long sleeves, ample water, and salty snacks, and take short, frequent breaks whenever you find even a small patch of shade. Even if you may feel less hot due to strong winds, hydration is still key. Distribute your remaining water in relation to your descent distance, and it's safer not to assume the next water source will always be available.
Point-to-point courses include not just the hike itself but also the logistics of retrieving vehicles and public transport connections. If you leave your car at the starting point and arrive at a distant descent point, you might struggle to catch a taxi or deal with extended travel times. Check bus schedules, taxi-call areas, and how to arrange accompanying vehicles in advance. To save on your phone battery, downloading an offline map and carrying a power bank can be beneficial for confirming junctions and emergency contacts.
Good views are more like a bonus that you encounter when the weather permits. If fog is thick or winds are strong, don’t linger on the ridge waiting for a view; instead, move towards your planned return point. When taking photos, avoid stepping out onto cliffs or rocks off the trail. You don't have to step on every summit to gain valuable experiences from walking just a part of the ridge. Those who can adjust their segments to align with their current weather and physical condition are likely to enjoy hiking longer in the future. Only after safely returning will the scenery of the ridge yield wholesome beauty and good memories.
