A Collection of Valley Trekking Courses by the Sound of Water
National trekking courses along designated trails following valley landscapes
The charm of valley trekking does not lie in swimming in the water. Just slowly encountering the sounds of water, scenes of streams, waterfalls, and rock formations while walking along a designated trail can completely change the vibe of a summer hike. This list selects actual courses that either run alongside or encounter valleys multiple times, clearly noting starting and ending points. Even the same valley can vary greatly in distance and slope depending on how far you go, so it's crucial to also check the course name.
Valleys are places where it’s difficult to judge conditions based solely on the weather at the bottom of the mountain. Even if it’s not raining in your current location, heavy rain upstream can cause the water level to rise rapidly within a short time. If there’s a rain forecast or heavy rain warning, it’s best not to enter, and if there was significant rainfall the previous day, check if the trail is open. The wet rocks and moss near the water can be very slippery, so for safety, avoid stepping off the designated path for photos or crossing while barefoot.
The list includes a variety of routes, from short round trips to courses connecting valleys and ridges. Don't just compare distances and times; also consider whether there are bridges, stone stairs, stepping stone sections, and turn-around points. If you're hiking with children or those inexperienced in trekking, it’s usually better to choose wider trails over paths that get too close to the water. Make sure to check the onsite information boards and announcements from management organizations on the day of your visit before choosing your course. The water levels in the valley can change daily.

The path next to the valley can feel cool, making it easy to forget to hydrate. However, if the uphill climb and high humidity combine, dehydration can still occur. Make sure to sip water before you get thirsty, and pack some quick snacks to replenish salts on longer courses. Keeping your phone and spare socks in a waterproof bag will help in case of sudden showers or splashes. A lightweight raincoat that allows the use of both hands is much more practical than an umbrella on rocky paths.
Before you start, it's a good idea to identify two or three nearby safe return points. This is because deeper into the valley, communication can weaken and alternate routes may become limited. If the sky suddenly darkens, the water's color becomes murky, or branches start to wash away, stop sightseeing and immediately retrace your steps back along the designated trail to higher ground. Marked restrictions and no-entry signs are not just for convenience for play in the water; they're warnings to avoid the risk of swift currents and falling rocks.
The water scenery of each course changes with the season and rainfall. If water is low, there's no need to venture further into the valley, and if the water is high, there's no reason to get too close. Enjoy the scenery from designated viewpoints and bridges, and leaving no trace is the best way to preserve the landscape for your next visit. If the weather is unstable, consider switching to a nearby temple forest path or nature observation trail instead of the valley. Including the judgment to change your destination will help make your summer valley hike a great memory.
