8 Places to Explore the Past and Present of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh
A Day Connecting the Timelines of the Capital from the Mud Walls of Al-Turaif to Modern Skyscrapers
Riyadh may seem like a city rapidly increasing in high-rise buildings, but to truly understand the capital, one must start from the oasis of Wadi Hanifah and the mud brick architecture of Diriyah. If Al-Turaif District and Masmak Fortress showcase the scenes of nation-building, the National Museum connects a much longer history of the Arabian Peninsula. Moving on to the Kingdom Center and KAFD, we can contrast what the same city’s current skyline looks like.
This list comprises eight ideal spots arranged to visit historical districts in the morning and at sunset, while placing museums and modern architecture in the hot midday. Since the distances between locations in Riyadh are long and not easily connected by walking, a separate travel time must be set aside. Al-Turaif District
This is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Diriyah, the center of the first Saudi state. Following the Najdi-style mud brick palace and alleyways above Wadi Hanifah, one can explore the formation of the Saudi state and the structure of an oasis city.

Bujairi Terrace
This is a dining and walking area in Diriyah that faces Al-Turaif. As the sun sets, both the mud-brick ruins and modern landscaping can be seen, making it a nice spot to relax after historical explorations. Reservations for dining and entry to the ruins may be managed separately.

Masmak Fortress

A valley stretching to the west of Riyadh that served as a natural base for Diriyah's growth. Taking a short break from urban architecture, you can view oasis landscapes, palm trees, and waterways. Since the area is very long, failing to set a destination can unnecessarily prolong vehicle travel.
