Washing and Storing Knits for Longevity

Knits have a more flexible structure than woven fabrics, making them comfortable, but they can easily change shape due to water, heat, friction, and weight. Even though they may look like the same sweater, wool, cotton, and acrylic react differently when washed, so using the same methods for all garments can lead to shrinkage or stretching. First, check the fabric composition and care instructions on the product label or remaining thread label.

This guide is organized in order from checking for stains to hand washing, removing excess water, flat drying, dealing with pilling, folding for storage, and pest management. It does not mean that hand washing is always the best answer, and if the manufacturer permits machine washing, those conditions should take precedence. For expensive items or items with uncertain dye stability, it’s safer to test an inconspicuous area first or seek professional laundry advice if in doubt.

The key to knit care is to quickly check for stains and wash only as needed in a manner suitable for the fabric, rather than frequently washing. Hot water, strong friction, and sudden temperature changes can cause wool to shrink, and lifting it while wet can stretch it due to the weight of water. It’s important to develop a habit of supporting the garment while moving it from washing to drying.

Store completely dry knits in a folded position in a ventilated area rather than on a hanger. Before seasonal storage, remove sweat and food residues and regularly ventilate storage boxes and closets. Pilling can be managed by laying the fabric flat and carefully removing it in small amounts, while reinforcing thin elbow and cuff areas before they develop larger holes will help extend the life of your favorite garments.
