A Historical Journey through Jinju's Imjin War at Jinju Fortress and Chokseokru

A deep exploration of the fortress, museum, shrines, and the memory of Nongae in one region

The historical journey in Jinju begins densely within Jinju Fortress, which is situated along the Namgang River. The fortress is the site of the famous Jinju Battle during the Imjin War and the second battle, while Chokseokru showcases both military command space and architectural beauty. Uiam and Uigisa explain how Nongae's story is remembered through location and rituals, and Changnyeolsa honors those who sacrificed themselves in battle. The statue of General Kim Si-min and Hoguksa convey memories of victory and national defense in different languages.

You can start your visit by exploring the background, weapons, and records of war at the National Jinju Museum, then walk through the fortress walls or summarize your experience at the museum afterwards. Although the eight locations are in the same area, they don't overlap in significance. Different types of spaces, such as walls, pavilions, museums, shrines, and natural rock formations, can be identified, and be sure to check the timelines on the signage to avoid confusion between the battles of 1592 and 1593.

Jinju Fortress

This represents Jinju's main fortress, built using the cliffs and plains along the Namgang River, and is the site of the Jinju Battle during the Imjin War and the second battle. Walking along the fortress walls, you can understand the overlapping structures of defense facilities and memorial spaces by observing the locations of the gates, pavilions, shrines, and museum.

Chokseokru

This pavilion overlooks the Namgang River from the southern cliffs of Jinju Fortress. It served as a command space during exhibitions and was a place for culture and relaxation, making it a good spot to consider the relationship between terrain and architecture. By changing the direction of the river visible between the columns, the pavilion's location becomes more apparent.

Uigisa

This shrine holds the portrait and tablets of Nongae next to Chokseokru. It provides insight into how the events at Uiam have been consolidated into character representations and ritual traditions in later generations, allowing one to view Nongae's story from the perspective of historical memory. Observing the portrait and the expressions on the plaque together reveals how Nongae's statue has been organized across different eras.

This shrine honors those who died in the Jinju Fortress battles. Unlike the symbol of victory, it emphasizes sacrifice and memory, thus balancing the exploration of the fortress. This space allows you to reflect calmly on the layout of ritual spaces. Observing how names are recorded and verifying the objects of the rituals helps to concretely understand the human toll of the battle.

Jinju Fortress is a place of victory, yet it also contains great sacrifice. While it's easy to remain focused on the heroic narrative surrounding General Kim Si-min and the first Jinju Battle, visiting Changnyeolsa, Uigisa, and the National Jinju Museum leads one to reflect on how memories of soldiers, citizens, and women have been chosen and commemorated. The moment you gaze from Chokseokru at the relationship between the Namgang River and the fortress walls, the battles recorded in history become connected to real geography.

The interior of the fortress has a mix of gentle paths, stairs, and dirt trails, so comfortable shoes are a must. Check for the museum's closing days, cultural events, and night openings as they may vary by season. Uiam is a risky area by the river, so it should be viewed from designated viewpoints. Instead of just recording the names of individuals in each location, writing a sentence about the purpose of the space will help preserve the history of Jinju's Imjin War more balanced.
