From Gimnyeong to Sehwa: A Trip Along Jeju's East Sea
An east coast outing resting at the beaches of Gimnyeong, Woljeong, Pyeongdae, and Sehwa, and meeting the haenyeo's stories
Between the beaches you need a car or public transport, and it is best not to think of the five places as one short walking course. If time is short, narrow it to two beaches and the museum. The photos below are reference scenes from different seasons and shooting times and do not guarantee the present sea color or facility operations.
Gimnyeong Beach
A Sea Walk Starting at Gimnyeong Beach
The geological trail and the beach walk may differ in the sections walked and the preparation needed, so first check the usable paths on the on-site signboard. Even if parasols or swimming facilities show in summer photos, that does not mean they operate on your visit day. In autumn especially, think of a walk looking at the sea, and for getting in the water follow the official opening and safety guidance. Use the actual designated parking area and keep village access roads and fishing work spaces clear. When moving on to Woljeong too, do not stop on the road because the coastal view has caught your eyes.
Woljeongri Beach
Looking at the Sea and Resting at Woljeong-ri
The seats and props in the photos may be facilities of individual shops, so read the conditions of use and take a seat. Nearby shops do not all open and close at the same times, so check the hours of the one you want to rest in. Even if you see people surfing, that does not mean an individual can go straight into the water. Lessons, equipment rental, and beach operations and safety conditions each need checking. On village roads, watch for residents' vehicles and pedestrians, and park only where it is permitted before walking to the beach.
Pyeongdae Beach
Pyeongdae Beach, a Small Sea Beside the Village
The description of a small beach does not always mean few people or an open spot you want. Look at the passable sections on site and choose a place to rest. If you see Olle markers, rather than pushing to follow the whole course, it is better to decide first the distance you will return and the starting point. Fishing village association facilities and gear in use are not viewing props, so keep your distance and do not touch them. Do not expect summer rentals or food stalls to continue into autumn; bring water and what you need, and you can enjoy the short walk more comfortably.
Sehwa Beach
Shallow Sea Views from Sehwa Beach
Sehwa is a place that tourism guidance states is not a formally opened and managed designated beach. Even though the name includes beach, do not take it as a place where lifeguards and swimming facilities are always ready. At high tide the sandy beach can shrink greatly or be submerged, so check the tide and wave conditions and avoid going down close to the sea. For seaside chairs or photo facilities, use them after checking the current conditions of use. On windy days, you can change the plan by resting in the village or going to the museum first.
Jeju Haenyeo Museum
The Life History of the Sea at the Haenyeo Museum
According to the operator, viewing is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and ticket sales close at 5 p.m. Mondays, January 1, and the Seollal and Chuseok holidays are closure days, so check your visit day first. The individual fee for adults aged 25 to 64 from outside the island is 1,100 won, and conditions differ for island residents, youths, and free-entry groups. Also check separately for discount proof and whether a guided tour needs reservation. Rather than entering late after viewing the sea, calculate the remaining viewing time and reorder your plans, so you can end the trip without rushing the exhibits.
Leave breathing room: park, look around the beach, then move on to the next place. Enjoying the seaside view and swimming have different conditions, so do not expect safety facilities outside the opening season. A plan that lets you turn back depending on rough seas, high tide, and on-site controls is more comfortable.
