Collection of Care and Observation Supplies to Help Temporary Foster Animals Adapt
Care items to reliably care for and record initial meals, bathroom habits, anxious behaviors, and health changes.
Once you begin fostering, you become the daily observer of the animal. Records of how much they eat, whether they drink water, their bathroom habits, how much they bark at night, and their fear of people become crucial information for later adoption consultations and veterinary visits. The first few days are a period to observe 'what environment they stabilize in' rather than simply thinking ‘how cute’ they are. This list gathers supplies to help observe and manage the adaptation and health changes of temporary foster animals.
Pet Home Camera
A home camera helps check how the animal behaves when left alone in the early days of fostering. They may be quiet when people are around, but bark or cry when left alone, or conversely, might eat when alone but avoid food in front of their caregiver. If it has night vision and recording capabilities, it's easier to identify their behavior patterns. However, constantly watching the camera may increase the caregiver's anxiety, so it's best to use it to check records during needed time frames.

Eating and Elimination Record Notebook
Meal and Bathroom Record Notebook
The records kept by the foster caregiver are immensely helpful for the animal. Noting when and how much they eat, whether they drink water, their bathroom conditions, and if they have taken any medication allows for early detection of unusual signs. During adoption promotions, information like 'are they quiet when alone?', 'where do they go to the bathroom?', and 'what toys do they like?' is important. It doesn't have to be a dedicated notebook; regular entries in a note app or shared document will suffice.

Pet Scale
Weight changes are a significant indicator of health. It's especially advisable to regularly check the weight of young kittens, sick puppies, elderly animals, or those recovering right after rescue. If you don’t have a dedicated scale, the caregiver can hold the pet and then subtract their own weight. If there is a rapid decrease in weight or a reduced food intake in a short period, it should be quickly reported to the shelter and a veterinarian.

Enzymatic Waste Cleaner
Enzyme-Based Bathroom Cleaner
In the early days of fostering, bathroom accidents can happen. If odors linger, there’s a higher chance of repeat incidents in the same spot, so quick cleaning is essential. Many enzyme-based cleaners focus on breaking down the causes of bathroom odors rather than just masking them with fragrances. General strong-smelling cleaners can be irritating to animals, so it's essential to check if they are pet-safe and compatible with the flooring before using.

Calming Treats and Low-Stimulus Treats
Calming Treats / Low-Stimulation Treats
Treats can help build trust with the temporary foster animal. However, in the initial adoption period, their digestion can be sensitive, so it's best to avoid giving too many types of treats right from the start. It’s advisable to use small amounts of low-stimulation treats or single protein treats and to stop immediately if diarrhea or vomiting occurs. Treats should be used to quietly reward good behavior rather than forcing the animal to come close.

Nose Work and Puzzle Toys
Nosework / Puzzle Toys
Nosework and puzzle toys help the animal expend energy by exploring on their own. For shy rescued dogs, olfactory activities indoors can be a safer start than walks, while cats can use treat-seeking toys to alleviate boredom. However, if the difficulty is too high, they may become frustrated or lose interest, so starting from very easy levels is recommended. After use, it’s important to clean away saliva and treat crumbs.

Elizabethan Collar and Surgery Gown
E-Collars / Surgical Recovery Garments
Some temporary foster animals may require care immediately after neutering or need help with wound treatment and skin condition management. E-collars or surgical recovery garments help prevent them from licking or scratching their wounds. However, some animals may experience significant stress from wearing them, so they should be used in accordance with guidance from the responsible organization and vet. If the size is not right, it may hinder eating or drinking. During use, it's important to frequently check for any issues with eating, drinking, or bathroom habits.

Medication Assistance Pill Pocket and Syringe
Pill Pockets / Syringes for Medication Administration
After being rescued, animals often need to take medication. Pill pockets or dosing syringes can help reduce the stress of giving medication. However, not all medications can be mixed with treats, so you should always follow the guidance of your veterinarian or the rescue organization. Record whether the medication was given and immediately report if the animal vomits or spits it out. Forcing medication can be harmful to both the caregiver and the animal, so it’s advisable to seek help if you encounter difficulties.

Care supplies make fostering more comfortable, but they cannot replace observation and record-keeping. If you notice signs of decreased appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, coughing, excessive hiding, aggression, or continuous crying, it's important to quickly share this with the shelter and a veterinarian. Detailed records from the foster caregiver are also greatly beneficial for the future adopters. Information like 'what food they enjoy', 'what sounds scare them', and 'how they behave when alone' plays a vital role in finding the animal's next family.
