A Collection of ETFs by Type for Comparing Investment Characteristics

An overview of ETF types that vary by purpose, including domestic stocks, international stocks, bonds, dividends, themes, commodities, and leveraged/inverse ETFs.

Although they share the same name, ETFs can have very different investment characteristics. ETFs that track large domestic stocks, U.S. tech stocks, bonds, dividends, commodities, and leveraged/inverse ETFs all have different reasons for making and losing money. Therefore, when choosing an ETF, it’s essential to first verify which assets you are exposed to rather than just looking at the return rankings. This list organizes ETFs by type, making it easy to compare their purposes and risks.

Domestic Stocks ETF

Domestic Stock ETFs

Domestic stock ETFs are a fundamental type to consider when you want to diversify investments in the domestic stock market. They can be divided into products that track large-cap indices like KOSPI 200, growth and tech-heavy indices like KOSDAQ 150, and those that follow specific sectors or styles. Domestic stock ETFs are relatively less affected by exchange rates but are sensitive to domestic economic conditions, corporate performance, and foreign net buying. For long-term investments, it is advisable to compare the composition and fees of the underlying index and trading volume.

Overseas Stocks ETF

International Stock ETFs

International stock ETFs are a convenient way to access overseas markets from domestic accounts. They can track various underlying indices such as the U.S. S&P 500, NASDAQ 100, global dividend stocks, and emerging market indices. However, international stock ETFs can still be affected by exchange rates even when traded in won, and differences in trading hours between the underlying asset markets and the domestic market can lead to tracking errors or timing discrepancies in price reflection. Depending on whether there is currency hedging, the impact of exchange rates can vary. Even the same international index ETF can differ in tax implications and trading methods between domestic listing and direct listing overseas, so comparisons are necessary.

Bond ETF

Bond ETFs

Bond ETFs may appear to be stable assets, but their prices fluctuate with interest rate changes. Short-term bond ETFs have relatively low volatility, while long-term bond ETFs are more sensitive to interest rate changes. When interest rates fall, long-term bond prices may rise; conversely, when rates rise, losses can increase. For corporate bond ETFs, credit risk should also be considered alongside interest rates. When choosing bond ETFs, it’s essential to check the duration, credit ratings of included bonds, maturity structure, distributions, and fees. First, determine whether the purpose is to replace cash-like assets or to invest based on interest rate direction.

Dividend ETF

Dividend ETFs

Dividend ETFs are a highly regarded type for investors seeking regular cash flow. There are various products available, including high-dividend stocks, dividend growth stocks, and monthly dividend structures. However, a high dividend yield alone does not necessarily mean it’s a good ETF. A stock price drop can make the dividend yield appear higher, and if the earnings stability of the constituent stocks is weak, the sustainability of dividends can decrease. When evaluating dividend ETFs, it’s crucial to check the history of dividend payments, included stocks, sector bias, total return, and taxes. Dividends represent a portion of returns, and do not guarantee principal protection.

Theme ETF

Theme ETFs

Theme ETFs are used when you want to invest in specific industries or trends. There are many areas of interest, such as semiconductors, secondary batteries, AI, robotics, defense, biotechnology, and eco-friendliness. While theme ETFs diversify across several stocks, they may seem less burdensome than individual stocks, but in reality, they are tied to the same industry risks and can be quite volatile. Despite having similar names, the constituent stocks and their weights can differ, so it’s essential to check the underlying assets. Short-lived trending themes can attract high trading volumes at peak prices, so caution is needed to avoid chasing.

Raw Materials ETF

Commodity ETFs

Commodity ETFs are of interest when you want to diversify away from stocks and other assets. There are various types, such as gold ETFs, oil ETFs, and agricultural product ETFs, although their structures can be complex. Some products reflect spot prices directly, while others utilize futures contracts. Futures-type products may incur rollover costs or yield during the expiration process, which can lead to movements that differ from actual spot prices of commodities. Understanding the structure is crucial before investing, as KRX Academy also dedicates a separate topic to commodity ETFs and ETNs.

Leverage ETFs

Leveraged ETFs

Leveraged ETFs are designed to track the daily returns of an underlying index multiplied by a specific factor. They can be used for short-term directional trading, but when held long-term, due to the effects of compounding and volatility, they can behave differently from the simple multiple of the index's cumulative returns. The Korea Financial Investment Association's learning system provides a mandatory pre-training course for individual investors trading leveraged ETPs. Leveraged ETFs can also amplify losses, making them burdensome for beginners approaching long-term investment. It’s essential to check the structure and educational requirements.

Inverse ETFs

Inverse ETFs are designed to move in the opposite direction of the underlying index. They can be used for short-term hedging or responding to a down market, as they can provide profits when markets decline. However, many inverse ETFs are designed based on daily returns, and holding them long-term can lead to results that differ from expectations. Particularly, leveraged inverse products carry higher risks. It is challenging to predict market direction, and losses can rapidly increase during rebound periods, so it's crucial to set clear stop-loss criteria and investment duration. Beginners should approach only after thoroughly understanding the structure.

Understanding ETF types makes it easier to choose products that match your investment goals. If you want to invest long-term in the overall market, consider index-type ETFs; if you’re looking for cash flow, look at dividend-type ETFs; if you want to assess interest rate trends, check out bond-type ETFs; and if you're confident in a particular industry, consider theme-based ETFs. However, leveraged/inverse, commodity, and international ETFs come with additional risks related to their structure, exchange rates, rollovers, and tracking errors. ETFs are convenient but not simple. Before making a purchase, it’s important to check the underlying index, constituent stocks, fees, taxes, trading volume, and the investment prospectus.
