One Hour Southwest of Luoyang, the Scenery Changes

While the famous names of Nogu Mountain and Baiyun Mountain are representative of the Luoyang vicinity, there are other mountains, temples, and geological landscapes scattered throughout the southwestern counties. Yiyang's Ling Mountain Temple, Huaguashan, Luoning's Shenlingzhai, Luyang's Xitaishan, and the Dinosaur Geopark are a bit far apart to combine in one day, but each can serve as a worthwhile destination for a day trip. I chose actual places based on their difficulty levels for walking and seasonal scenery rather than their fame.

Many sites are difficult to access with public transport alone, so it's essential to check the last bus schedules for charter vehicles or local buses. Mountain tourism sites may close certain sections during rain, strong winds, or fire prevention periods, and the timing of spring flowers or autumn foliage varies each year. Before setting out, check the current open areas and expected temperatures instead of trusting online photos blindly.

In the southwestern suburbs, it's better to choose based on what kind of day you desire rather than how far you can go from the city. Ling Mountain Temple offers cultural heritage and a short walk, while Huaguashan and Shenlingzhai provide rocky trails through the forest. Xitaishan showcases seasonal flowers along its ridges, and the Dinosaur Geopark is great for family-oriented nature education. When taking photos, don't just focus on a single viewpoint; try to capture the changing vegetation and rocks along the paths as well.

If you are using a vehicle, make sure to clearly designate times for waiting and returning with the driver, and save Chinese addresses and offline maps to prepare for areas with weak cellphone signals. Water, snacks, a portable charger, and a thin windbreaker are useful regardless of the season. If roads are officially closed, do not attempt to detour, and if the weather is not good, it's safer to switch to dining in urban areas or indoor places.
