A Day in Shanghai via Metro Line 10

Shanghai Metro Line 10 connects the Hongqiao transit hub with the former French Concession, historical city center, and Yangpu University area all at once. Starting from Hongqiao Station, the line passes through the Zoo, Traffic University, and Shanghai Library, then continues to Xintiandi, Yuyuan Garden, and Nanjing Donglu, changing the city's landscape along the way. This route is great for comparing various eras while minimizing transfer times.

Instead of focusing on tourist spots, we'll explore eight actual stations and describe the exits and nearby destinations. Line 10 has direct and branch lines with transfer stations, so be sure to check the end routes on the departure board, and be aware that often there’s still walking to do from the station to the attractions. This itinerary is organized in an easy-to-follow list, selecting four to five stops for the day, taking into account advance reservations, closing times, and last trains.

For a day on Line 10, it's better to divide your areas of interest into two segments rather than trying to hit every stop from the west at Hongqiao to the east. Traffic University, Library, and Xintiandi make for a nice modern architecture walk, while Yuyuan Garden and Nanjing Donglu can be linked to the historical city center and the Bund. If you want to explore Wujiaochang, consider visiting it separately on days when you're interested in the university district to reduce walking and transfer fatigue.

Exit numbers may change due to construction or closures. Check the station's information and map apps while considering last trains, security checks, and large luggage. At Hongqiao Station, the transfer time from high-speed rail to metro can be long, and at Nanjing Donglu, there may be extra walking needed to reach the Bund. Flexibility to skip to the next station if you fall behind on time helps make traveling along the line more comfortable.
