Quiet Places in Gyeongju's West, Where Tourists Are Relatively Few

If your trip to Gyeongju only covers Hwanglidangil and Bomun Tourist Complex, you may miss the other charms showcased by Angang, Seomyun, and Sannae in the west. Around Oksan Seowon, traces of scholarship and life from the Joseon Dynasty continue along the valley, while Geoncheon and Seomyun retain seasonal landscapes of royal tombs and rural villages. Entering Sannae, you can encounter a leisurely scene created by wide grasslands and rivers.

This list gathers cultural heritage sites like Oksan Seowon, Dokrakdang, and the Thirteen-Story Stone Pagoda at Jeonghyel-sa, along with Heungdeok Wangneung, Dorima Village, Hwarang Hill, and Dongchangcheon in Sannae. It's more practical to divide your exploration into Angang and Seomyun/Sannae rather than trying to cover all at once from downtown. Many places are easier to visit by car rather than public transport, and the roads can get dark after sunset.

A quiet place doesn't mean it's a space you can enter freely because there aren't any people. Hanok (traditional Korean houses) and seowons (Confucian academies) separate public areas from private spaces, and in rural villages, you shouldn't disrupt residents' lives or agricultural work. Valleys and rivers can change quickly in water levels after rainfall, so prioritize on-site regulations. Safety and observance etiquette come before enjoying seasonal landscapes.

A trip to the west of Gyeongju is different from a tight schedule that quickly ticks off famous places. In Angang, you can visit Oksan Seowon, Dokrakdang, and the Thirteen-Story Stone Pagoda at Jeonghyel-sa in one flow, and you can also add the forest surrounding Heungdeok Wangneung. The direction of travel changes between Dorima Village in Seomyun and Hwarang Hill/Dongchangcheon in Sannae, so it's better to plan a separate half-day itinerary, balancing driving and time spent.

In hanok and seowons, be careful not to enter private areas just because doors are open; adhere to designated viewing areas. Dorima Village can get crowded with visitors in the fall season, so follow designated parking and pedestrian routes without entering agricultural land for photos. The grasslands and rivers in Sannae are highly affected by the weather, so it is safer to check information on rain, strong winds, and water levels beforehand.

The advantage of this region is that you don't have to rush through the gaps between places. You can take your time enjoying the courtyard of the seowon and the forest of the royal tombs, making it easy to return to downtown or your accommodation before sunset. Some areas may lack convenience facilities, so bring water and simple supplies, and be sure to take your trash back with you. Maintaining a quiet demeanor should be considered part of your journey as well.
