Scenic Views Along the Sea in Gampo, Gyeongju's East Coast

Gyeongju is known as a city of Silla relics, but at its eastern edge, a long stretch of ports, lighthouses, sea caves, and sandy beaches awaits discovery. The area around Gampo Port retains the everyday life scenes of fishing boats and alleys, while Jeonchon and Najung offer opportunities to encounter unique rock formations and beaches in succession. Expanding the range to include the northern Oryu Beach and southern Yangnam's Gwanseong and Eupcheon reveals a different atmosphere, even along the same East Coast.

This list is curated to avoid overlap with existing Gyeongju attractions like the Tomb of King Munmu, Gamyun Temple Site, and Yangnam Columnar Joint, focusing on Songdaemal Lighthouse, Gampo Port, Jeonchon Sea Cave and Jeonchon Port, Najung Fine Sand Beach, Oryu Goara Beach, Gwanseong Solbat Beach, and Eupcheon Port. While Gampo’s central points are close to each other, it’s advisable to separate the routes for the northern and southern areas for efficiency when including Yangnam in a single day.

The East Coast can see rapid changes in wave height and wind even on clear days. Visitors should avoid forcibly entering too far into Jeonchon Sea Cave and rocky formations for the sake of photography, and check for tidal changes and entry restrictions. Port breakwaters and fishing facilities should not be encroached upon. The regulations for seasonal camping, cooking, and swimming at beaches may vary, so always prioritize on-site guidance.

The Gampo area flows naturally to connect Songdaemal Lighthouse, Gampo Port, Jeonchon Port, Jeonchon Sea Cave, and Najung Fine Sand Beach. Oryu Goara Beach is a great spot to leisurely relax in the northern part of Gampo, while Gwanseong Solbat Beach and Eupcheon Port can be grouped as a separate itinerary for Yangnam, enhancing travel efficiency. If planning to catch the sunrise, don’t forget to prepare for pedestrian safety in the dark hours.

Although the sea may appear calm, wet rocks and the edges of breakwaters can pose dangers. Accessibility conditions for Jeonchon Sea Cave vary based on wave height, tides, and on-site restrictions, so sometimes viewing it from a distance is a part of the experience. Be mindful of working vehicles and fishing equipment at the port, and check for swimming zones and camping/cooking regulations on the beach. Prioritizing safety and choosing viewing points that are safer than the photo spots is crucial.

Coastal travel suits better to enjoy the movement of the wind and the harbor in one or two locations rather than trying to increase the number of spots. If bad weather is expected, don’t push through with sea routes and consider switching to indoor spaces in Gampo or urban plans. Beginning travel before sunset will allow for a more stable experience of Gyeongju’s East Coast, taking into account driving fatigue and public transport times.
