A Collection of Mountains in South Korea Perfect for Beginner Hikers
Considering public transportation access, route options, physical demands, and descent paths for beginner hiking candidates
When starting hiking for the first time, it's important to choose mountains that match your physical ability and travel routes, rather than just famous ones. Selecting a mountain solely based on peak height may lead to steeper slopes or longer descent times, making the hiking experience overwhelming. This list gathers domestic mountains that beginners should consider when planning their first hike, taking into account public transportation access, route options, intermediate descent possibilities, and nearby conveniences.
Bukhansan
Bukhansan is one of the most frequently visited mountains for beginner hikers due to its easy access via public transportation from Seoul and northern Gyeonggi Province. However, not all routes are easy despite its fame. The Baegundae peak course includes rocky areas and stairs, where beginners may find it risky if they overexert themselves. Initially, it's advisable to choose gentler trails like the Bukhansan Circular Trail or the shorter paths from Ui-dong, Jeongneung, or Gupabal. Check the park's trail difficulty and closure information on the National Park Service website, and since weekends can be crowded, it's safer to start early in the morning.
Achasan
Achasan is a low mountain with good accessibility, making it suitable for beginner hikers. It is easily reachable from Gwangnarujeong or Achasan Station, and the trail to the summit is relatively short, reducing the burden on those walking for the first time in hiking shoes. Once you reach the ridge, you can enjoy a great view of the Han River and eastern Seoul, providing a satisfying experience for a short hike. However, even though it’s a low mountain, caution is necessary on slippery dirt paths and rocky areas after rain. In seasons with shorter days, it’s advisable to avoid night hiking and to carry at least water and a light windbreaker.
Inwangsan
Inwangsan allows hikers to experience both history and great views in the heart of Seoul. It connects to places like Gyeongbokgung, Seochon, Buam-dong, and Independence Gate, making it easy to plan walks and cafe visits before and after the hike. While the height is not overwhelming, the summit has rocky and stair sections with handrails, so caution is needed during rainy or snowy conditions. Beginners should not let their guard down simply because the course is short; it's better to ascend slowly. Connecting to the Seoul Fortress Trail enhances the scenery but increases the distance traveled, so it's important to choose sections that match your stamina.
Namsan
Namsan is an urban mountain that is great for checking your walking fitness before hiking. It can be accessed from various directions like Seoul Station, Myeongdong, Hoehyeon, Itaewon, and Hannam-dong, with options for circular paths and stairways to adjust difficulty. The summit provides views and facilities that help beginners easily feel a sense of accomplishment from the hike. However, selecting a course with many stairs may put strain on your knees, so it’s advisable to choose a gentler path for descent. This mountain is also great for short evening walks or family outings on weekends.
Gyejoksan
Gyejoksan is a popular hiking and forest path for citizens in Daejeon. It's particularly known for its clay paths, making it popular among those looking for leisurely walks or barefoot hiking. Approaching the summit is more manageable for beginners when taking a slow walk along forest trails rather than rushing up. It’s a great option for families or those who have just started hiking, but be cautious as the paths can get muddy or slippery after rain. If planning to walk barefoot, it's best to check the condition of your feet, availability of washing facilities, and the weather beforehand to avoid overexertion.
Mudeungsan
Mudeungsan is a representative mountain of Gwangju and a national park that combines urban accessibility with beautiful natural scenery. The columnar joint landscapes like Seoseokdae and Ipseokdae are famous, but hiking to the summit requires stamina and time. Beginners can reduce their burden by starting with relatively short trails around the Jeungsimsa or Wonhyo Temple areas. It is conveniently located near Gwangju city with easy access to public transportation and good dining options post-hike. However, as it is a national park, it is essential to check for trail restrictions and weather information, and to prioritize safe descent times over ambitious peak goals.
The goal of beginner hiking isn't to conquer high mountains but to safely ascend and gain experience descending without overexertion. Before hiking, always check the weather and any restrictions on trails, sunset times, potential need for water and snacks, and the condition of your hiking shoes. It's best to start your first hike with a companion, taking the shortest and most populated trails.
