However, the moments that are often more memorable aren't at the famous landmarks, but rather found in the alleys, small ports, local restaurants, and around the local markets. Traveling through villages is less about consuming special facilities and more about borrowing the pace and lifestyle of the area to take a leisurely stroll.

This list compiles neighborhoods where you can experience the atmosphere of local village travel in Jeju. It includes the seaside village of Sehwa in the east, the island and art villages of Hallim and Han-gyeong in the west, the cliff and coast villages of Andeok and Sagye in the southwest, and the port villages of Aewol and Seongsan. Most of the locations are village-scale, so coordinates are organized based on easily recognizable points that travelers can find, such as beaches, ports, village halls, or popular walking spots.

Villages serve as tourist attractions while also being living spaces for residents. When taking pictures in the alleys, it's best to avoid private properties and living spaces, and be mindful not to disturb working spaces around the ports. Utilize public parking or designated spaces, and adopting a leisurely walking style with just one cafe and a short walking route planned works best.

Sehwa-ri

Sehwa-ri is a great neighborhood to start your local village travel in eastern Jeju. Walking along Sehwa Beach, the flow that naturally connects you to the local market, cozy cafes, bookstores, and restaurants makes it perfect for immersing yourself in the village rather than just passing by the sea. The leisurely atmosphere typical of Gueongju-eup and traveler-friendly shops make it less daunting even for first-time visitors.

If you visit on the day of the Sehwa local market, you can catch a glimpse of the market scene as well, and even on non-market days, the nearby beach stroll and cafe breaks are quite attractive. However, as the village interior is a residential area, it’s best to avoid photographing private residences and properties.

Jongdal-ri

Jongdal-ri is an excellent place for a quiet village trip between Seongsan and Gujwa. With Jimibong, Jongdal Port, and Jongdal Beach nearby, you can enjoy views of the sea, oreums, and ports all at once. It is located on the route to quickly move toward Seongsan Ilchulbong or Udo, but if you make Jongdal-ri your destination, you will see a much calmer side of eastern Jeju.

Within the village, small restaurants and cafes are scattered, making it ideal for walking and resting without any big plans. Just be cautious around the port, as it is a working space for fishing activities and avoid interfering with working vehicles and equipment. If you include a stroll up Jimibong, be sure to pack comfortable shoes and water, and on windy days, it’s better to limit your time near the coast.

Gimnyeong-ri

Gimnyeong-ri is famous for its emerald-green Gimnyeong Beach, but it would be a shame just to pass by the beach without exploring the village. Inside the village are old alleys, a spring water area, and small shops, and walking along the coastal road, you can enjoy the unique refreshing scenery of Gujwa's sea. It's especially good for summer travelers who want to combine water activities with village walks.

While Gimnyeong Beach is the main highlight, if you have time, it's nice to take a slow stroll around Seogial Beach or Cheonggulmul. Just be careful around the spring water and port areas, as they are shared spaces with local residents, and be mindful of litter and noise. This is recommended when you want to see slightly more liveliness than in Woljeong-ri.

Daepyeong-ri

Daepyeong-ri is a village where you can feel a quieter southwestern Jeju situated between Jungmun and Andeok. The scenery created by the Parksoogijeong cliffs is impressive, and walking along Daepyeong Port and the village paths offers a different tempo from the tourist-centric areas of Jeju. This area, also known as Nandreu, features a natural connection of sea, cliffs, small restaurants, and cafes.

Since the village is small, it suits a leisurely walk around the port area rather than a long course. It's best to avoid entering private properties or dangerous edges just to see the cliff scenery, and utilize designated parking spaces. This area is also good for finding quiet evening courses from accommodations in Jungmun.

Biyang-do

Biyang-do is a small island off the coast of Hyopjae, making it a perfect getaway from the bustle of Jeju's main island. When you take a ferry over and walk the island paths slowly, the landscapes of the sea, port, small villages, and oreums are all within close distance. It is well-suited for a more leisurely walk during a half-day trip rather than rushing through tourist spots.

Traveling to Biyang-do is highly dependent on ferry schedules and weather conditions. If it’s windy or if the maritime conditions are poor, operations may change, so it's necessary to check before departure. While on the island, please be considerate of the local residents and adhere to basic manners like taking your trash back with you. Combining this with a schedule in Hyopjae or Geumnung deepens your experience of western Jeju.

Hado-ri

Hado-ri is a coastal village in eastern Jeju that retains a calm atmosphere. With Hado Beach, migratory bird areas, Byeolbangjin, and the scenery around Tokkiseom nearby, you can enjoy a combination of sea, ecology, and ancient defense ruins. Although it is located between well-known routes like Seongsan and Sehwa, slowing down a bit can lead you to discover a much quieter side of Jeju.

Be careful around the migratory bird areas, as it is an ecological space, so it's best to avoid loud noises and intrusive approaches. While walking along the coastal road and near the port, you should also consider vehicle traffic and workspaces. Including this between Sehwa-ri, Jongdal-ri, and Seongsan increases the density of eastern village travels and is ideal for those who enjoy walking more than taking photos.

Sagye-ri

Sagye-ri is a southwestern village that features the beauty of Sanbangsan, the sea, and the brother islands together. With close accesses to Yongmeori Coast, Sagye Beach, Sanbangsan, and Songaksan, it is easy to visit just the scenic spots, but taking time to walk through the village offers a more enriching experience. The coastal road with small restaurants and cafes also provides a nice mid-day break.

The sensations in this area can fluctuate depending on the wind, waves, and if access to Yongmeori Coast is controlled. When near the coast, avoid approaching rocks or the water's edge too aggressively, and be cautious of vehicles while traveling around Sanbangsan. If you want to experience the sea, mountains, and village atmosphere all at once in southwestern Jeju, Sagye-ri is worth considering as your destination.

Aewol Gonae-ri

Aewol Gonae-ri allows you to enjoy a slightly more residential coastal village atmosphere than the popular cafe street in Aewol. As you travel along Aewol Coastal Road, it's nice to stop for a bit to enjoy the port and sea, and find a small cafe or restaurant for a break. Being not far from the airport, it can be conveniently included in your arrival day or final day itinerary.

Since Aewol is a highly popular area, it may get crowded with vehicles during weekends and peak seasons. Parking in the inner village alleys can inconvenience residents, so it's better to use public parking or more spacious areas. It pairs well with the Handam Coastal Trail, Gwakji, and Ihoteu direction for a natural northwest coastal village tour.

Ojo-ri

Ojo-ri is a village that offers a great walking experience while looking at Seongsan Ilchulbong from a slight distance. Unlike the touristy atmosphere of central Seongsan, the surroundings of Ojo Port and Naesumeon Ddeokbang Path are relatively calm, allowing you to appreciate the sea, wetlands, and the silhouette of Ilchulbong together. It’s perfect for those staying in Seongsan or for anyone who has already visited Seongsan Ilchulbong and wishes to see views from another angle.

The main point of focus is Naesumeon Ddeokbang Path, but it’s more enriching if you also explore around Ojo Port and Siksanbong. It’s lovely for an evening walk or early morning stroll, and on windy days the feel of Naesumeon Ddeokbang Path may change. Be cautious around the port, as it is a shared living space and avoid blocking the paths of work vehicles and residents.

Jeoji-ri is a great spot to step away from the sea-centric Jeju travel and instead enjoy the atmosphere of art, forest, and quiet village life. With the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, Jeoji Cultural Arts Village, the Gotjawal forest, and the garden-style tourist attractions nearby, you can spend a calm day here. It's also relatively stable, making it easier to plan your routes even on rainy or windy days during your western travel.

While the main point is the Hwanseong Gotjawal Park, you can group it with the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, the Thinking Garden, and Jeoji Oreum based on your preferences. Inside the village is a quiet living space, so it's best to reduce vehicle speed and avoid entering private properties and workspaces. This area is particularly well-suited for travelers who enjoy cafes and exhibitions.

Planning a local village trip too tightly can diminish its charm. Choose just one destination and stroll around leisurely. In Sehwa, for example, you can enjoy the beach and local market, in Jongdal, the port and Jimibong, in Daepyeong, Parksoogijeong and the port, and in Jeoji, the museum and forest pathway; each neighborhood has its defining scenery.

However, remember that village paths may not be well-maintained like tourist spots, and you should avoid blocking vehicle traffic in narrow alleys, as well as entering residential areas, fields, or workspaces. Drone shooting or commercial photography may require prior permission, so be cautious. If you want to experience Jeju more quietly and deeply, pick one or two villages to stay in for an extended time.
