The Changing Stages of ‘Hanro’ with the Same Song

Even the same song can convey different emotions depending on the space and arrangement in which it is performed. The official music video for ‘Ipchun’ presents the basic narrative of the track through polished audio and visuals, while ONSTAGE reveals the synergy between the closely positioned band and vocalist. Listening to both the fast-paced original and the stripped-back acoustic live version of ‘Domeong’ side by side transforms a frantic escape into a quiet confession.

‘Jaee’ also highlights the different textures created by the empty spaces of the music video and the roughness of the live session. By incorporating the sessions from the albums ‘Jip’ and ‘Jamongsalgu Club’, we broaden our perspective from individual song comparisons to the overall flow of the full album performances. Instead of just focusing on high notes or audience reactions, we guide the listener to notice the differences in tempo, the entry points of the band, and the final echoes based on the first line of the song.

The music video fixates meaning through edited visuals and sound, while the live performance leaves room for chance encounters between breaths and instruments. The acoustic arrangement brings the unease of the lyrics to the forefront, while the album sessions showcase the connections between various tracks. The key is to listen for which emotions of the song amplify or diminish in each environment rather than arguing over which version is better.

When comparing, it's best to avoid flipping back and forth between the two videos. Instead, play each from start to finish. Recording impressions from the first for the overall impression and the second for the vocalist's breath, drum entry, guitar density, and ending will clarify the differences. Adjust the volume of your earphones and speakers to similar levels, and use the original official videos over unofficial edits to ensure more accurate sound quality and performance context.
