A Visit to the Tranquil Temples and Forest Paths of Hangzhou

The Buddhist culture of Hangzhou becomes more profound when considering not just Yong'en Temple but also the temples of Biraibong, Yongbok Temple, and Dongguang Temple along the forest paths. Within the same area, the characteristics of the temples, the difficulty of the trails, and the flow of visitors differ, with Gyeongsansa and Yeongsunsa showcasing entirely different mountain landscapes to the west and north of the city center.

It’s a good idea to combine a big temple visit in the early morning with one or two nearby mountain temples. Be sure to check the entrance fees, reservation policies, and incense usage guidelines, and avoid taking photos and being loud during prayer times. Prepare comfortable shoes for the stone steps and forest trails, and calculate the timing for the last bus, cable car, and descent first.

Temple visits are more memorable when considering how the height of the mountain, water paths, and the flow of worship create space rather than just counting the number of temples. Starting from the stone carvings of Biraibong and moving to Yong'en Temple and Yongbok Temple, the differences between religious sculptures, large temples, and meditation spaces in the forest unfold naturally. It's better to dedicate a separate half-day for Tianzhu Mountain or Gyeongsansa.

Follow the onsite regulations for incense and offerings, and do not capture photos of monks or visitors up close without permission. Avoid entering closed meditation areas or shortcuts, and reduce your trail time in case of heavy rain. Rather than focusing on famous photo spots, concentrate on the sound of the temple bell, the changes in the forest, and the attitudes of those using the temple to see Hangzhou's temples as vibrant cultural spaces, rather than simply tourist backgrounds.
