Standing under the Bridge Extends Gwangju's Waterways

The rivers of Gwangju are not just a scenic vision flowing on the outskirts of the city; they are a major axis connecting the lifestyles of Buk-gu, Seo-gu, Gwangsan-gu, and Nam-gu. The large bridge spanning the wide surface of the Yeongsan River and the low bridge over the Gwangju Stream showcase different city lines through the repetition of pylons, the reeds of the embankments, and the surrounding buildings and fields.

This list highlights eight actual bridges, excluding the already introduced Seo-chang Scenic Outlook and Hwangnyeong Water Park. We recommend not photographing from the roadway and instead focusing on viewing the structures from the riverside walking paths and embankments, while also providing safety information such as water levels, strong winds, and bicycle passage for each location. Checking the operating hours and weather before your visit will give you extra time to consider compositions on-site.

Taking photographs of bridges can yield vastly different impressions depending on whether you capture them broadly or in a compressed view. Open up the water and sky with a wide-angle lens, or overlap the pylons with a telephoto lens. On calm days, take advantage of surface reflections, while on cloudy days, focus on the texture of concrete, and after sunset, use vehicle lights to bring out a completely different portrayal of Gwangju with the same bridge.

Safety should come before achieving a good composition. Do not approach beyond the roadway or guardrails and avoid occupying bike paths and sidewalks for extended periods. After it rains, check embankment closures and water levels, and at management facilities such as Seungchon Weir, follow guidance on sluices and control lines to safely capture riverside photographs.
