When the Curtain Rises: The Old Voices of Guangzhou

Guangdong opera is not just singing; it combines vocal techniques, dialogue, gestures, martial arts, costumes, and instruments, creating a unique Lingnan performing art. By first learning about roles and stage grammar at the art museum, and walking along Enning Road where the Bahe Association is located, you can see how art has continued in the professional community and alley life outside of the theater. In actual performances, the sleeves and movements seen in the exhibition come to life.

We gathered 8 actual locations including the Southern Theater, Guangdong Yue Opera House, Hong Xian Nu Arts Center, and the Cultural Center, as well as the Wuyi Theater and Xinghai Concert Hall. Since Guangdong opera does not perform every day, selections are made based on the current programs. Please check the subtitles, seat views, and photography and recording restrictions, and we have organized the itinerary by linking one museum with one performance.

If it's your first time, it's easier to check out roles and instruments at the museum and then choose a short excerpt performance. At Enning Road, explore both the Bahe Association and the museum, and then move to the Southern Theater or a specialized theater with a program for an actual performance. Comparing how traditional music is arranged in modern venues is also a good way to enjoy the shows.

Even if the performance titles are the same, the cast, running time, and subtitle availability might differ. Be sure to check the seating chart and entry age restrictions at the ticketing sites, and avoid moving or talking after the performance starts. When experiencing costumes, follow staff guidance not to touch artifacts and comply with photography and video regulations. If you focus on how a single movement and percussion signals change a scene, you can enjoy it deeply even without knowing the language.
