Your first trip to Shanghai reveals the city’s structure quickly when you divide it by the Huangpu River. To the west at The Bund, you can see modern architecture and the riverside promenade, while to the east in Lujiazui, you can encounter the modern skyline created by Shanghai Tower, Oriental Pearl Tower, and Jin Mao Tower. Nanjing Donglu and People's Square serve as the urban axis connecting the two areas, and Xiliupu Pier becomes the starting point to see both landscapes on the river.

The observatories and river cruises have different operational hours and entry methods depending on the day, and views can be limited in inclement weather. Instead of reserving multiple high-rise observatories, it’s more efficient to choose just one during your preferred time in the day or night. Prepare a map, payment, and translation tools to use in mainland China before departing, and check the passport requirements and security check conditions for each facility.

On your first day, a pleasant route would be walking from People's Square along Nanjing Donglu to The Bund, and watching the lights of Lujiazui across the river as the sun sets.
