From Cauldron Rice to Garaetteok: What to Enjoy at the Icheon Rice Culture Festival
Rice dishes and traditional games to pick from at Bokhacheon Waterside Park
Rather than packing in every meal and performance, it works better to pick two or three things you are interested in. Below are six programs from this year's official lineup, checked on October 15, that differ in character as food, participation, and viewing. We left out the opening ceremony that has already ended, and for programs with set sessions we listed the dates and times separately. The photos are official reference images for introductions and may differ from this year's on-site layout or how things are run.
Cauldron Rice for 2,000 People at 2,000 Won, Icheon Rice Culture Festival
Cauldron Rice: Icheon Myeong, Icheon Won (가마솥밥 이천명 이천원)
Time your lunch to these sessions, but it is better not to assume you can eat whenever you want if you arrive right before serving starts. When you arrive, check the waiting line, payment method, and whether serving has ended. Hold your child's hand while receiving hot rice, and check where you will eat first, which makes it easier for a group to move. If you plan to go to another program after the meal, leave time to tidy your bowl and wash your hands.
600m Rainbow Garaetteok Pulling, Icheon Rice Culture Festival
600m Rainbow Garaetteok Pulling (600m 무지개가래떡뽑기)
Deciding beforehand whether your whole group will join or some will watch from outside makes things less hectic on site. If you go with children, it is better to follow the position the guide assigns and when to put hands on, and take photos from a spot that doesn't block the activity route. The official daily timetable lists it at 3 p.m. every day of the festival, at Haneul Madang. Check the participation fee and sign-up method separately, and look at any same-day change notices. Also go by the on-site notice for how the rice cake is shared and what finished product is provided.
Icheon Rice Master Competition, Icheon Rice Culture Festival
Icheon Rice Master Competition (이천쌀밥명인전)
The official daily timetable lists 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on October 15 and 16 as preliminaries, 11 a.m. on the 17th as the final, and 1 p.m. the same day as the awards ceremony. Remember that on Saturday afternoon you will see the awards ceremony instead of the rice-cooking contest. Watch who cooks in what order and talk about your own taste. Watching alone does not guarantee tasting or taking part in judging, so just move according to the host's guidance.
Township Dragon Tug-of-War, Icheon Rice Culture Festival
Town and Village Dragon Tug-of-War (읍면동 용줄다리기)
Don't assume it is a free activity where any festival visitor can grab the rope right away. Tell the viewing area from the participants' area, and it is good to tell children not to go near when the rope moves. Rather than blocking the walkway for one front-facing photo, looking at the whole scene of many people joining forces is better for enjoying the event. If you are thinking of the 12 noon cauldron rice session afterward, leave separate time for travel and waiting to eat.
Tightrope Performance, Icheon Rice Culture Festival
Tightrope Walking Performance (줄타기 공연)
The performance is more fun when you can see even the small movements on the rope, so rather than taking photos constantly, follow the direction of the body and the footing slowly. When watching with a group, stand where you won't block the view of people behind and don't step into the performance area. Whether the outdoor performance actually goes ahead and where the audience waits should be checked in that day's notice. If you pick the afternoon performance, a good plan is to finish lunch and a walk first and then return to Pungnyeon Madang without rushing.
Icheon Flower Outing, Icheon Rice Culture Festival
Icheon Flower Outing (이천꽃나들이)
It is not a course that promises a big flower field full of a particular flower or the blooming of a variety you want. Follow the exhibits and signs on site, and if there is a plant you like, enjoy it by asking its name and how to care for it. If you are thinking of buying a potted plant, it is practical to check first whether it is for sale, the price, and how you will carry it back. When taking photos, don't move the display stands or pots and keep the viewing route clear. You can also think of it as a place to briefly join companions who are waiting for another paid activity.
The number of participants and on-site routes may change depending on operating conditions. Before you leave, check the official timetable and the transport and parking notice, and make your trip home plan too, so you don't carry cooked food or purchased produce for a long time.
