Walking Deep into Chiaksan from Saeryeom Waterfall to Yeongwon Fortress

If the first natural list of Wonju included a beginner's trip incorporating Gu ryongsa and the valley, this list focuses on the walk deeper into Chiaksan. Saeryeom Waterfall is a goal point in the Guryong area, while Birobong is the destination for a challenging ascent to the summit. The Hwanggol Visitor Center marks the starting point for a relatively short but steep summit approach, and the Geumdae Branch is a reference point for checking the condition of the southern trail.

Yeongwon Fortress requires both a hiking and a historical exploration focus, and the Guryong Auto Camping Ground serves as a base for early departures or forest stays. Since these six locations do not represent a continuous course, they should be chosen according to one’s physical condition. National park trails can be closed due to wildfires, heavy rain, or freezing, and the descent times from Birobong and Yeongwon Fortress should be calculated before sunset.

On a journey deeply walking Chiaksan, the decision to turn back is more important than reaching the destination. The forest path to Saeryeom Waterfall and the summit hike to Birobong require significantly different times and energy, and Hwanggol and Geumdae have different starting directions. Observing the remnants of the fortress walls at Yeongwon Fortress may slow down your pace compared to general hiking.

Before departure, check for any trail closures in the national park, as well as rainfall, wind speed, and perceived temperature. Make sure to prepare water, snacks, insulating layers, and a headlamp. You must adhere to lodging reservations and cooking regulations at the camping area. Rather than pushing to complete the summit, it's safer to leave behind a meaningful experience among the waterfall, ridge, or fortress. Bringing back trash and not disturbing wildlife or vegetation are also basic rules for enjoying the deep mountains.
