Preparing Your Pet for Travel Before Summer Vacation

Traveling with your pet during summer vacation can introduce many variables along the way, often more than at the destination. Even though it may feel cool inside the vehicle, it can quickly become dangerously hot, and unfamiliar travel crates and long delays can be burdensome for both dogs and cats. There are no moments where it is okay to leave them alone, even if the windows are cracked open or the vehicle is parked in the shade.

This list covers everything from brief vehicle acclimation, crate size and ventilation, backseat securement, and supplies like water, food, medications, and documents, to rest stops, accommodation regulations, and local veterinary services. Crates should allow your pet to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around while keeping air vents unobstructed. During travel, recording any changes in appetite, water intake, bowel movements, breathing, and behavior once a day will help detect any issues early. If you notice concerning changes like rapid breathing, excessive drooling, lethargy, or vomiting, stop your plans and move to a cooler place before contacting the local veterinary clinic. Emergency treatments should not be a substitute for veterinary care, and avoid using human medications arbitrarily.

The key to preparing for pet travel is not packing a lot of gear but proactively eliminating potential points of failure. Common issues include leaving pets alone in a parked vehicle, obstructed air vents in their crates, unsecured seats, long drives without rest stops, and accommodation rules that haven’t been double-checked. Before leaving, the driver and caregiver should read the checklist together and delegate responsibilities for checking water and breathing, which will speed up decision-making during travel.

Getting your pet acclimated to the vehicle should begin with short, comfortable trips before the actual travel day. Set up the crates or harnesses to fit their body shapes and check from the backseat if the air conditioning doesn’t just stay in the front. Smart thermometers and vehicle cooling features are supplementary tools but should not justify leaving your pet behind after you park. If there are places where pets aren’t allowed, you should plan to split caregivers or use safe care facilities.

If your pet is eating, hiding, breathing rapidly, or experiencing vomiting or diarrhea differently from their normal behavior at the destination, don’t assume it’s just fatigue. Prepare recorded changes and medication and vaccination documents to easily explain the situation to a local veterinarian. You may be able to cancel or cut short your trip, but health decline won’t wait.
