An Architectural Walk Through Kampong Glam Beyond the Golden Dome
Tracing the Formation of the Area Through Royalty, Religion, and Educational Institutions
The architecture of Kampong Glam cannot be explained by just one style. The palace of the Johor Sultan, the royal mosque, educational institutions founded by Arab philanthropists, worship spaces of the Malabar community, and a mosque built by women entrepreneurs are all located within close proximity. By comparing the exteriors of these buildings, we can naturally reveal the roles that the royal family and immigrant communities played in the formation of the city.
This list is not a ranking based on age or grandeur but a walk connecting historical functions. Many of these places are still used as schools and worship spaces, so let's prioritize field rules and observe the plaques and structures from public walkways instead of assuming we can enter freely. In places where exhibits are possible, it's good to read about the people and stories of interactions hidden behind the buildings as well.

Malay Heritage Centre
Using the former Istana Kampong Glam, this Malay heritage institution reopened in April 2026 after renovations. The six permanent galleries illustrate how the identity of Singapore Malays has changed through interactions with the region.
Observing the traditional Istana's architecture alongside the new exhibitions allows one to read the transformation of the royal precinct into a cultural institution. It's useful to examine the narrative identity of the galleries before noting the building's facade.
Check the official site for opening dates, admission deadlines, and whether to make exhibition reservations. Instead of quickly viewing the royal architecture and leaving, read the narrative of regional interactions presented in the permanent exhibition before walking around Sultan Gate for a deeper understanding.

Gedung Kuning
Named 'Yellow House' due to its yellow exterior, this preserved building formed part of the old royal precinct. It's a great place to explore how the living spaces of royalty and local elites were arranged alongside each other.
The Yellow House complements the living spaces next to the palace and the traces of those around the royal family. Rather than fitting it into one frame with the Malay Heritage Centre, let’s compare the distances and directions of the two buildings from the courtyard and street.
The current operating entity and usage may vary, so focus on viewing the exterior. Do not occupy the entrance and business spaces like a filming set; rather, follow the pedestrian route leading from the Malay Heritage Centre's courtyard.

Sultan Mosque
Starting from the royal mosque of the Johor Sultan, this national monument showcases Indian, Islamic, and European elements in its Indo-Saracenic style. It is said that the black band under the golden dome is made from glass bottles donated by ordinary citizens.
The current dome and facade decorations are results of the 20th-century reconstruction process. Instead of simplifying the early royal mosque and the current building as the same, let’s verify the building dates and donation stories from Roots.
As this space is still used for worship, avoid Friday congregational prayers and prayer times. Follow the dress code for conservative attire and shoe storage, and prioritize guidance on internal openings, guiding availability, and photography rights on-site.

Bussorah Street
This pedestrian street leads up to the front of the Sultan Mosque and was historically a gathering point for those preparing for the pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Kampong Kaji. Today, the preserved shop houses house restaurants and shops, overlapping the timelines of royalty, pilgrimage, and commerce in one scene.
The axis of the street is more significant than the buildings themselves. When recalling the pathway leading to the Sultan Mosque and the past pilgrimage preparation market, the commercial function of the preserved shop houses connects to the historical walk.
When taking photos of the mosque facade, do not block restaurant seating or entrances. There is little shade in the afternoon and increased dining crowds in the evening, so choose wether to walk in the morning or around sunset based on your purpose.

Madrasah Alsagoff Al-Arabiah
This Islamic educational institution is linked to the waqf of Arab philanthropist Syed Mohammed bin Ahmed Alsagoff. Through its history of teaching Islam, Arabic, and English, it shows that Kampong Glam was a center not only for worship but also for learning and publishing.
The school's exterior reflects the structure of the waqf from Arab merchants that has led to education and welfare. It is not a target for internal tours for tourists, so read the explanatory materials and spend a brief moment in front of the main gate.
As this is currently a school where students live, do not attempt to enter or photograph students. Confirm only the architecture and plaques from public pathways, and keep the main gate clear during school hours to prioritize educational activities.

Malabar Mosque
This mosque was established by the Malabar Muslim community in Singapore and its blue-tiled exterior contrasts sharply with the surrounding shop houses. It shows that the local Muslim composition was not uniform, presenting a different worship space from the royal mosque and other immigrant communities.
The mosque with its blue walls illustrates that each community had its separate worship spaces and organizations. Instead of solely comparing colors with the Sultan Mosque, let's also read about the background of Malabar Muslim immigration.
As Victoria Street has heavy traffic, avoid taking photos in the middle of the road or on entrances. Community schedules for prayers and funerals take priority, and verify internal visiting possibilities and dress codes on-site.

Hajjah Fatimah Mosque
Founded in 1845 by wealthy Malay woman entrepreneur Hajjah Fatimah, this national monument is a rare mosque named after a woman. Its leaning minaret resembles a European-style spire, and its Indo-Islamic decoration showcases the multiculturalism of the architecture.
This is a case where the economic power and faith-driven charity of a woman entrepreneur were preserved in architecture. Alongside the visual characteristics of the leaning minaret, do not overlook the history of the Malay, Bugis, and Arab communities that utilized the mosque.
As it is a bit away from the tourist center, consider the large road crossings and the heat. During prayer times, refrain from internal visits while adhering to modest dress codes and photography rules, and observe the leaning minaret from safe sidewalks.

Aliwal Arts Centre
This complex art space hosts traditional arts and modern creation organizations, truly showcasing its character on days of performances, workshops, and exhibitions. The murals on the exterior and the street behind represent the current creative ecosystem of Kampong Glam.
Concluding the historical walk in a modern art space allows you to confirm how the conservation area is being utilized today. If no performance is taking place that day, only the exterior and public spaces can be seen, while respecting the privacy of operating studios.
As it’s not a place that is always open like a permanent exhibition space, first check the schedule of programs. Do not enter resident organization's studios arbitrarily, and when photographing murals, do not disturb vehicle access and event installations.

The joy of an architectural walk does not end at finding different shapes. The palace represents royal power, the mosque embodies faith and community, the madrasah symbolizes education and charity, and the arts center showcases today's creations. Connecting these functions helps us understand that Kampong Glam is not a frozen district in the past, but a living area where people still learn, pray, and create.
In schools and religious facilities, let's prioritize etiquette over photography, and for places where only the exteriors are viewable, be sure to read the narratives provided by Roots to enhance understanding. If you have more time, you can extend your walk along the Heritage Trail map to the old school and riverside. However, rather than aiming to find all markers, it’s safer to shorten your course based on which spaces are actually open that day and the weather.
