A Piano Trio Where the Three Musicians' Breath is Clearly Heard

A piano trio may seem simple with only three instruments, but the relationship between the musicians is most vividly revealed. There are traditional setups where the piano leads the melody while the bass and drums accompany, and there are also formats where all three instruments engage in an equal improvised conversation. Differences arise in the responses of the audience, song lengths, and the level of risk taken by the performers between studio recordings and live club performances.

For each album, I noted what to listen for in terms of the bass's independence, the drums' involvement, and the piano's touch. Initially, you may follow along with the piano, but hearing the same piece focused through the bass and drums reveals the balance created by the three musicians much more clearly.

Oscar Peterson showcases a clear swing and technique, while Chick Corea presents sharp transitions in rhythm and harmony. Trio albums can have a significantly different character even with the same pianist if the members change. Don't just look at the leader’s name on the album cover; make sure to note the bassist and drummer as well. In live performances, observe the changes from the first tempo after the applause to the conclusion of the piece, and in studio albums, check out how ideas are compressed into short pieces.
