Hidden Cultural Heritage of Haenam through Haenam Hyanggyo and Jinsan-ri Celadon Kiln Site

Haenam's cultural heritage is not only found in large landmarks like Daheungsa and Nokwoodang, but also in the urban hyanggyo (Confucian school) and the rural kiln sites. Haenam Hyanggyo served as a space for local education and rituals honoring Confucius and Confucian scholars during the Joseon Dynasty, showcasing the educational order of the district through the arrangement of its buildings. The Jinsan-ri celadon kiln site proves that Haenam was a producer of celadon during the Goryeo Dynasty through the traces of kilns found underground and the excavated pottery shards.

There are only two clearly defined independent sites, so I did not force a larger number. One is a traditional building still in use, while the other is the remains of a production facility, which makes a significant difference. By questioning the function of space at the hyanggyo and the conditions of earth, fire, and transportation at the kiln site, this trip, although brief, offers a highly concentrated experience.

The hyanggyo and the celadon kiln site present two different foundations for life: education and production in Namwon. The Daeseongjeon and Myeongnyundang of the hyanggyo represent the order of people and knowledge, while the celadon kiln site illustrates the network of materials, technology, and distribution. Even if there are few striking finished products, restoring the vanished activities through information boards and geography is the fun of exploring hidden heritage.

Visits to the hyanggyo may be restricted during rituals and educational events. The celadon kiln site borders agricultural land, so it's important to stay on designated paths and avoid picking up shards or touching the remains. Checking the local museum for relevant artifact exhibitions can further enhance understanding of the relationship between the site and the finished celadon.
