Indoor Spaces in Gwangju That Are Perfect to Enjoy on Rainy Days
Explore art, history, science, and food culture without worrying about the weather
On rainy days in Gwangju, it’s better to choose two indoor spaces with different exhibition styles rather than forcing yourself to visit outdoor attractions. Media art at Gwangju Media Art Platform (GMAP), paintings at the Wooseok Gallery (우제길미술관) and the Municipal Museum of Art, cultural experiences at the Museum of Emptying (비움박물관) and the Korean Beauty Museum (한국미용박물관), as well as local history at the National Gwangju Museum (국립광주박물관), the science museum, and Kimchi Town, all offer different experiences. This list highlights actual indoor places suitable for solo visits, dates, or outings with children.
Just because you’re indoors doesn’t mean you don’t need to prepare. Some areas in art galleries and museums might be closed during exhibition transitions, and reservations may be needed for children's activities as well as the science museum's video room and kimchi-making classes. Be sure to bring bags for wet umbrellas and light outerwear, and check whether the outdoor transition from the parking lot to the entrance is lengthy. Combining one large facility with a smaller space in a day makes for ample time to enjoy and relax with the exhibits.

In the old downtown, you can connect GMAP, the Museum of Emptying, and the ACC Children’s Cultural Center using public transport. In the Jungoe Park area, you can choose between the Municipal Museum of Art, the History and Folk Museum, and the National Gwangju Museum. The National Gwangju Science Museum focuses heavily on hands-on experiences, while Gwangju Kimchi Town emphasizes food culture, making them well-suited for family plans. Wooseok Gallery (우제길미술관) is located at the base of Mudeungsan, so extra caution is needed for road and parking accessibility during rain.
Avoid touching exhibits or galleries with wet clothes and umbrellas, and adhere to photography bans and flash restrictions. If you’re visiting with children, rather than reading all explanations, choose one interesting exhibition to focus on, and inform them of the rules for different spaces to avoid mixing quiet viewers with interactive participants. If closures or reservation deadlines are confirmed, consider alternative spaces in the same area, and remember that minimizing movement during heavy rain is part of your travel planning.
