The first number that stands out when evaluating young hitters is usually batting average, but it alone makes it difficult to understand how many opportunities they received and in what ways they contributed to offensive efforts. In cases where the number of plate appearances is low, just a few hits can dramatically change the percentage, and on-base percentage and power metrics can fluctuate in different directions. Growth signals should be sought in the relationships between multiple metrics.
This list connects metrics from plate appearances and starts to batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, walk rate, strikeout rate, isolated slugging percentage, BABIP, home run frequency, and stolen base success rate. Once you’re familiar, you can add isolated slugging percentage, BABIP, and home run frequency as supporting metrics. Stolen base success rate should also be viewed alongside attempts. Remembering that small denominators can lead to large fluctuations in percentages can significantly reduce numerical misinterpretations.
By repeatedly checking official records after games, the metrics begin to connect with the actual plate appearances. Keep a brief record of the monthly plate appearances and results of players you’re interested in, and compare to see if the same trends continue into the next month.
