Even One Stone Remains, the Old Temple Site in Damyang Hasn't Disappeared

The traditional landscapes of Damyang include not only famous pavilions but also stone heritage in mountain temples and fields. The buildings of Yongheungsa (용흥사) and the Boriam Temple on Chuwolsan (추월산) are set against forests and cliffs, while the stone lantern of Gaeseonsaji (개선사지) and the stone pagoda at Gaeksari (객사리) and Namsanri (남산리) remain steadfast even after the temples have disappeared or the urban landscape has changed.

This list excludes previously introduced gardens and hyanggyo (향교), and instead features eight actual temple sites, stone heritage, and commemorative monuments. It provides photography reasons for each spot like eaves of shrine buildings, cliff views, stone lanterns in fields, and stone pagodas in towns, as well as guides for religious rituals, cultural heritage preservation, and hiking safety based on location. Checking the operating hours and weather beforehand allows for more time to find good compositions on site.

When capturing temple and stone cultural heritage, stories come to life when the surrounding space is included along with the subject. For stone pagodas, a low-angle vertical shot enhances height, while stone lanterns in the fields should include the mountains and agricultural land to explain their location. Mountain temples are best captured by overlapping eaves with the forest, and finding a safer distance from Boriam is advisable to capture layers of the mountains and the lake.

When prayers and rites are conducted, photography should stop, and it’s essential to check the guidelines for the interiors of the temples. Avoid leaning against or climbing on the pagodas and lanterns, and do not trespass on surrounding farmland or private properties. For mountain heritage, monitoring the weather and trail conditions and maintaining safety lines take precedence over any composition.
