A Trekking Guide to Chuncheon’s Mountains and Valleys: From Gugok Falls to Yonghwa Mountain by Difficulty

When exploring Chuncheon's mountains, it's essential to understand the differences in access before considering their heights. Gugok Falls can be reached easily along a well-maintained trail, while Munbae Village allows you to experience the rural landscape beyond the waterfall's back. Geumbongsan offers a challenging hike connecting Gangchon and Munbae Village along the ridge, whereas Geumbyeongsan interlinks Kim Yu-jeong's Silrae Village with literary scenery and forest paths.

Located to the north, Yonghwa Mountain requires preparation for rocky terrain and long hikes, while Jipdari-gol Natural Recreation Forest allows choices between overnight stays, forest recreation, and valley strolls. Instead of a list of all six spots in one day, we have categorized them into walkable, medium-distance, and summit hikes. Be sure to check seasonal freezing, fire regulations, and recreation forest reservations, and choose one or two spots that match your fitness level.

Gugok Falls and Munbae Village showcase the waterways and rural landscapes, while Geumbongsan and Geumbyeongsan reveal the ridges of Gangchon and Silrae Village. Despite all being in Chuncheon, the balance between rocky paths, dirt trails, valleys, and managed walking paths varies, affecting your equipment and time needed. When recording your trip, it’s more practical to note changes in terrain and forest than to focus solely on summit certifications.

After rain, the waterfalls and valleys will have increased water flow, but the risks of falling rocks and slipping will also rise. Avoid approaching the winter ice walls of Gugok Falls without permission and equipment; choose detours on the rocky paths of Yonghwa Mountain. Prepare water, power banks, and offline maps, and aim to descend before sunset. Make sure to check the operational hours, reservations, and pet policies of recreation forests and tourist spots separately.
