The Night View of China Changes While Walking on the Bridge

Real Bridges and Viewing Areas Crossing Rivers, Canals, and Seas

The bridges in Chinese cities serve as transportation facilities while simultaneously acting as long observation decks overlooking rivers and their banks. While walking on the Chongqing Qiansimen Bridge, the positions of Hongyadong and Zhangbeizhuizui seem to change, and at the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, both the Yangtze River and the Yellow Crane Tower come into view together. Some pedestrian sections are designed for scenic views of canals and lakes, like the Beijing Widaihe Bridge and the Shanghai Yuandang Pedestrian Bridge.

The large bridges in Guangzhou and Shanghai focus on the roadway; therefore, instead of stopping illegally on the bridge, official pedestrian walkways and riverside viewing areas have been selected. By adding the Xiamen Yandou Bridge platform and the Chengdu Ansunlang Bridge, we compare the nights of the sea, rivers, and urban waterways. The structure is designed to first check pedestrian accessibility, separation of vehicles and bicycles, control of strong winds, and water levels before considering lighting.

For bridge photography, it is safer and more stable to shoot from the riverbank parks and the entrances on both sides of the bridge, rather than venturing into the middle of the bridge. Even with a pedestrian walkway, if the passage is narrow and there is significant vehicle vibration, it is advisable not to set up a tripod and instead take short shots from the railing. Stopping along the roadside, shoulder, or bicycle lane poses a much greater risk than capturing a night view.

Bridge lighting may vary due to energy-saving measures, events, and maintenance; access to waterfronts can be blocked following typhoons or floods. Be sure to calculate the return distance after crossing to the opposite side and the time for the last train. Don't just store the bridge names on the map, but mark the actual pedestrian entrance and drop-off points as well. If the bridge is for vehicles only, it is advisable to change the viewing plan to one from the official riverside viewing area.
