Cheongju Lake and Forest Trip from Cheongnamdae to Okhwa Gukok

Exploring the nature of Cheongju is easy when you divide it into the wide surface of Daecheong Lake and the eastern forests and valleys. Cheongnamdae, Munui Cultural Heritage Complex, and Daecheong Lake Art Museum gather along the lakeshore in Munui-myeon, creating a route that connects scenery, history, and exhibitions. Yangseongsan Mountain offers a high view of the same lake, while Munui Bridge serves as a point to observe the relationship between the water surface and mountain ranges during your journey.

Moving to Miwon-myeon shifts the character of the trip to forests and valleys. Midongsan Arboretum allows for plant observation and gentle walks, Okhwa Nature Recreation Forest provides lodging and forest stays, while Cheongseok Cave is a place to closely observe cliff and river terrains. Given the distance between the lakeside area and Miwon area, it's better to focus on one region each day according to the season and your physical strength.

Daecheong Lake shows the same water differently from the garden of Cheongnamdae, the old village of Munui, and atop the ridge and bridge of Yangseongsan. Midongsan and Okhwa Gukok draw attention away from the openness of the lake to the details of trees, valleys, and rocks. You can change your focus based on the season, such as prioritizing walking in spring and autumn, seeking shade in the heat of summer, and considering road conditions and facility operations in winter.

Make sure to check the entrance and transportation policies for Cheongnamdae, as well as the reservation and accommodation regulations for the recreation forest. Be aware that Yangseongsan and Cheongseok Cave may have slippery conditions and limited safety facilities in bad weather. Bring water, snacks, and comfortable shoes, and aim to finish your hike before sunset. Instead of moving to many locations in one day, grouping three lakeside spots or three forest spots will allow for a more leisurely observation of Cheongju's nature.
