Places to Get Out of the Resort in Cancun
Outings picked by travel range, from hotel-zone ruins and public beaches to islands, coral reefs, and cenotes
If you are staying a few days in Cancun, set aside a day to take in the scenery beyond the resort's meals and swimming. Think of the museum and ruins in the hotel zone as a short outing, Isla Mujeres as a ferry day trip, and Puerto Morelos and the cenotes as nearby excursions that need separate transportation, and the choice gets easier.
This list is not a route for visiting all eight places in one go. The first four are in Cancun or the adjacent northern area, the next two are on Isla Mujeres, and the last two are in the nearby area south of Cancun. Check your lodging location, round-trip transport, and the weather first, then pick one or two places in the same area to enjoy resort relaxation and time outside together.

Playa Delfines
Playa Delfines is a leading public beach where you can see sea views outside the resort in Cancun's hotel zone. With its wide stretch of sand and sea views, it is good for a short trip, and you can choose it on days when you want a walk and photos more than a swim. If you want to see a different view from the beach where you stay at the hotel, tie it into a plan for the south end of the hotel zone.
Do not assume the sea here is always calm. Before going in the water, check the flags on site and the lifeguards' instructions, and on days with strong waves, skip swimming and enjoy the view and a walk. Bring protection from the sun and arrange your way back, and when you visit the nearby El Rey ruins too, check the entrances to the beach and the ruins separately on the map.

Cancun Maya Museum and San Miguelito Ruins
The Cancun Maya Museum is an indoor attraction that is good for understanding the background of Maya culture between beach days. After looking at artifacts from Quintana Roo and other Maya regions, if you walk on to the connected San Miguelito ruins, you can see the explanations in the exhibition rooms together with traces of architecture in the forest. It is a hotel-zone cultural route that suits travelers who cannot spend a whole day on distant ruins.
Check whether admission to the museum includes the San Miguelito visit, and the last entry time for each area. Operating hours may be listed differently even between official information pages, so it is best to go with the notice or ticketing information for that day before you leave. To avoid stopping after the indoor exhibits, bring protection against mosquitoes and sun and allow time to walk to the ruins, and check first whether it is open on Monday.

El Rey Ruins
The El Rey ruins are a place in the hotel zone where you can see traces of a Maya-era coastal settlement. Unlike a trip with a long journey to see a big pyramid, you walk along low buildings and the structures left in the plaza and imagine the trade and daily life of this area. They are in the same southern area as Playa Delfines, so they are a good way to add history to a beach outing.
The ruins are outdoors with little shade, so visit in the relatively cooler morning hours or check the weather. The basics are not to climb on the ruins or feed the animals on site, and to follow the designated viewing path. Check the admission fee and closing time in the INAH information, and even when walking from the beach, look at the road and crossing points first and choose a safe way in.

El Meco Ruins
El Meco is where you can see ruins connected to Maya maritime trade on Cancun's northern coast. Its location differs from El Rey at the south of the hotel zone, and you can visit while picturing the sea toward Isla Mujeres and its old role as a port. It suits people who are very interested in ruins and plan to head north of the city center.
The ruins are on the road between Puerto Juarez and Punta Sam, so do not assume you can get there directly on the hotel-zone bus. Decide on a round-trip ride first and check the official opening notice and visiting hours. If you plan to go on to the island after the ruins, work out which ferry terminal you will use, and leave separate time for getting to the dock and waiting to board.

Isla Mujeres Playa Norte
Playa Norte is a beach on the north end of Isla Mujeres, off the coast of Cancun. It suits a day when you want to leave the Cancun hotel-zone beaches, take a boat, and feel the atmosphere of another town. If you plan a day that covers both the island's center and the beach, you can spend more than half a day on just a walk and a meal, even without swimming.
Ferry service differs by departure dock, so first check which dock is closest to your hotel and which ferry you will actually use. After arriving on the island, look at the swimming conditions on site, and it is best not to assume that umbrellas and sun loungers are free. If you plan to go as far as Punta Sur at the south end of the island, leave extra transport costs and travel time, and decide before you set out on a plan to return in time for the last ferry back.

Isla Mujeres Punta Sur
Punta Sur is a place at the south end of Isla Mujeres where you take in cliffs and open views of the Caribbean Sea. Unlike the beach relaxation at Playa Norte in the north, the focus is on views and walks, and you can also see traces of a Maya temple and a sculpture park. It is a good candidate to add when you spend a day on the island and want to compare its different coastlines.
Do not assume you can easily reach the south end of the island just by walking around the ferry dock; plan on a vehicle. If you rent a golf cart, check the driving conditions and the return time, and if you take a taxi, it is best to decide how you will get back too. At the cliff edge and on wet rocks, stay behind the safety lines, and on windy days check on site whether the lower walking path is open.

Puerto Morelos Reef National Park
Puerto Morelos is a coastal town south of Cancun, and it is a good base for planning a snorkeling outing to observe the offshore coral reef with a guide. If you want to experience nature different from the resort pool, plan a day that combines a walk around town with a marine activity. Even if you do not go to the reef, there is a separate option of seeing the plaza and the coastal scenery.
Book a marine national park activity only after checking the local operator's permit, whether the boat is sailing, and the equipment and protection rules. Do not plan to swim far out from the beach to the reef on your own. Departures can be canceled by wind or waves, so leave room to switch to a walk around town, and follow the guide's instructions so you do not step on or touch the coral.

Cenote Kin Ha
Cenote Kinha
Cenote Kinha is a freshwater activity site in the Ruta de los Cenotes area of Puerto Morelos. Travelers who want to see water of a different color from the sea and the surrounding forest can consider it as a nearby outing. To avoid confusing the cenote named Kinha with similarly named places in other areas, compare the official location and operator when you book.
First check on the official site which cenotes and activities are included in the package you chose and whether round-trip transport is provided. Swimming and technical cave diving are different activities, so beginners should not take it as a plan to explore the inside of a cave without equipment. Follow the life jacket and on-site safety rules, and it is best to secure the last ride back along the forest road before you visit.

For a short trip, pair the Maya Museum or El Rey with a beach; if you can free up a whole day, pick a northern beach and a southern viewpoint on Isla Mujeres. For coral reef and cenote experiences, check the included activities, equipment, guide, and round-trip transport, and then book them as a separate outing. More distant ruins such as Tulum and Chichen Itza were left out of this list because the travel is a heavy burden.
Ruin hours and fees, ferry service, and tour packages can change. Before paying, go by the official operator's notice for the day, and for swimming at the beach, follow the flags on site and the lifeguards' judgment. If rain or strong wind changes your plans, adjust to indoor sights or resort relaxation rather than forcing yourself out to sea.
