The Eaves of Contemplation and the Serenity of Buyeo in the Courtyard of Hyanggyo

The traditional architecture of Buyeo shows different expressions through Muryangsaji (무량사) and Daejoji (대조사), stone pagodas in the fields, and remaining hyanggyo (향교) and old houses across various towns. Instead of only focusing on the eaves and courtyards, capturing the mountains behind and the villages and farmlands beyond the walls naturally reveals the reasons for the buildings' placements and traces of life.

This list includes eight actual temples, hyanggyo, and old houses. Since these are all actively managed or used spaces, we must respect worship and rituals, as well as the lives of the local residents. Always seek permission for internal photography and avoid entering restricted areas. It is also more efficient to group the western Muryangsaji region and the southern Imcheon (임천) and Hongsan (홍산) regions separately.

Traditional architecture photos come alive when you capture close details like eaves, window patterns, stone textures, and wall materials behind a symmetrical shot. Let’s also include the mountains with temples, villages with hyanggyo, and courtyards with old houses. Leaving space around the buildings highlights the differences in time and purpose naturally.

Muryangsaji and Hongsan Hyanggyo can be grouped in the western region, while Daejoji and Imcheon Hyanggyo belong to the southern region. Buyeo Hyanggyo and Yeohung Min's old house are great to include in the town itinerary. If ceremonies or prayers are in progress, stop taking photos and obtain permission for inside photography. It’s also respectful not to peek into private spaces within the walls.
