Must-Visit Autumn Foliage Mountains Around the Country
A mountain trip considering the difficulty and regulations based on national park entrances, temples, and resting areas
The timing for the change of colors in the famous foliage mountains across the country varies depending on the altitude and latitude, and even on the same mountain, the scenery can differ by several days between the summit and the valley. This list covers a wide area from Seoraksan (설악산) and Odaesan (오대산) to Naejangsan (내장산), Jirisan (지리산), Juwangsan (주왕산), and Mudeungsan (무등산), using actual starting points for exploration or scenic spots such as small parks, temples, resting areas, and cable cars instead of a vague mountain center.
There's no need to plan a summit hike just because a mountain has a famous name. There are options to see the foliage in shorter routes like temple access paths and valley trails, or cable car viewing sections. Conversely, for high-altitude areas like Seongsamjae (성삼재) and Seoraksan (설악산) where weather and traffic controls are frequent, it's essential to check the national park's visitor information and road conditions before departing. Calculate your descent time backward from sunset, and choose routes that are shorter than your stamina would normally allow. Consider the temperature differences by altitude and the time differences by region to avoid misapplying records of northern mountains to southern mountains.

The foliage of the mountains is more about the layers of colors you encounter on-site rather than the peak photos. Even after the leaves at the summit have peaked, the areas around the valley and temples may turn later, so it’s best not to fixate on a particular date. The distance and estimated time for the course often do not include breaks, photo-taking, and congestion. Be sure to prepare water, snacks, warm outerwear, and a headlamp, and check the national park’s reservations, parking, and shuttle options as well.
Stones and roots underneath fallen leaves can be hard to see, increasing the risk of accidents on descent. Wear shoes that support your ankles and avoid valley decks and rocky areas after rain. Illegal parking and walking on shoulders during the foliage season pose dangers to both vehicles and pedestrians. Follow trail controls and designated entry times, and remember that feeding wildlife or collecting leaves and fruits is a way to enjoy the mountains longer. If you are walking alone, be sure to share your route and the expected return time with family before you set out, and prepare for the possibility of losing communication.
