An Autumn Outing in Hwasun, Walking Along Dolmens and Flower Paths

A festival trip mixing autumn flower gardens, prehistoric culture, and character spaces

Head to Hwasun to see a landscape where long-lasting time carved in stone meets autumn flowers. The World Heritage Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival runs from October 16 to 25, 2026, around the dolmen sites in Hyosan-ri, Dogok-myeon, and Daesin-ri, Chunyang-myeon.

October 16 is free admission; from the 17th, general admission is 5,000 won, returned in the same amount as Hwasun Love Gift Certificates. Check the proof requirements for free-entry groups such as county residents. The photos and maps below are official reference materials, and bloom conditions and actual layout may differ.

Five Theme Gardens

If you want to see the flower scenery of the Hwasun festival, start with whichever of the five theme gardens interests you. Dogok has the photo garden, chrysanthemum garden, butterfly garden, and children's garden, while the animal garden is on the Chunyang side. It is nice to walk comparing the moods created by different colored flowers and sculptures. The county's introduction of this year's gardens covers several plants such as gaura, showing a different composition from a trip seeing only one kind of chrysanthemum.

If you think all five gardens are gathered in one spot, your travel plans can go wrong. First check where Dogok and Chunyang are on the festival map, and decide how much to see based on your group's stamina. The flowers in the photos will not necessarily be in bloom just the same on your visit day, so it is better to enjoy the scenery as it is. With children, look for shapes rather than touching the sculptures, and moving along the paths without stepping into flowerbeds lets other visitors take photos comfortably too.

Dolmen Site Guided Tour, Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival

Dolmen Site Guided Tour, Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival

Guided Tour of the Dolmen Site

While walking the flower paths, also feel that this is a World Heritage site. The county's festival guide this year introduces a tour of the dolmen site with Hwasun youth cultural heritage interpreters. Hearing the names of major sites such as Goebawi, Gwancheongbawi, Pingmaebawi, and Gamtaebawi, and looking at the stones' shapes and the surrounding terrain, you meet stories you might skip over when seeing only photos.

Even if several rock names appear in the guide, do not assume one session visits every spot in the same order. It is best to first check where and when the commentary starts, how to sign up, and the walking sections. With a family that finds long-distance walking hard, ask what range they can join and bring comfortable shoes. Do not climb on the ruins for photos or move the stones around; just follow the guided path. Sign-up conditions can differ between free strolling and the guided program, so rather than just following your group blindly after arrival, check at the operating booth.

Chunsik Village and History Road, Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival

Chunsik Village and History Road, Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival

Chunsik Village and the History Road

If you need a reason to start talking about dolmens with a child, look at Chunsik Village and the History Road. The official guide introduces a giant Chunsik and Apeach air balloon and character photo zones. The History Road is described as the section from the Dogok festival entrance to the ecological pond, so you can picture a walk where you hunt for characters while encountering the stories of the ruins. It is also a good way to take commemorative shots different from flower photos.

This does not mean events meeting costumed mascots or character shows go on all day. Check the photo zones operating that day and the paths you can use, and if people are waiting for photos, take quick shots group by group. The air balloon's operation may vary with weather or on-site conditions, so enjoy the areas currently open rather than counting on seeing a particular scene. Walk together so your child does not wander off following a character, and perhaps pick one funny name from the history signs as a topic for the next dolmen walk.

Jjangdori Village Prehistoric Culture Experience, Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival

Jjangdori Village Prehistoric Culture Experience, Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival

Jjangdori Village Prehistoric Culture Activities

If you are looking for hands-on activities, choose from those guided around Jjangdori Village. This year's introduction includes Bronze Age costumes and games, hunting and accessory making, a dolmen naming shop, and a Paljuryeong soap workshop. Pick one following the fun of each name, and ask what materials and stories it holds, and prehistoric culture feels a bit closer.

It is better not to assume that a single ticket lets you enjoy every activity on the list without limit. Check the day's programs, fees, eligible ages, and remaining materials at the operating booth, then decide the order. Follow on-site explanations for how the hunting or costume activities actually work, and children can get a guardian's help when using tools. For activities where you make a finished product, ask in advance how long it takes and how to take it home. Rather than hurrying through several, it is more enjoyable to give your child plenty of time at the one activity that interests them.

Taste-Based DM Performances, Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival

Taste-Based DM Performances, Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival

Genre-Based DM Concerts

If you want to hear music after viewing the flowers, check the DM concert schedule for your visit date. This year's festival announces special concerts by genre, including trot, retro, rock, and ballad. Even at the same festival the mood differs by date, so first pick the day of the music you like and then add garden walks and meals, and the day's purpose becomes clear. It also helps to look separately at the daytime local performances and the evening special stage.

This does not mean the whole lineup appears on the same stage every day of the festival. In particular, linked events such as the fan signing at Gwangdeok Cultural Plaza are at a different place from the main stage of the dolmen festival grounds, so check the location again. Do not judge special concert times by the general viewing end time alone; move according to the stage notice for that date. Prepare an outer layer and a way home for waiting for the show, and follow on-site guidance for seating and entry control. You might also choose this as a plan to rest while listening to music rather than taking photos.

If you love flowers and photos, center your day on the theme gardens; if you are interested in history, check the guided tour first. With children, picking one character space and one prehistoric culture activity each fills the day without strain.

Rather than rushing through all the zones of Dogok and Chunyang, calculate travel distance and rest time together. The gift-certificate refund is not the same as a cash refund, so check the participating shops where it can be used and the cost of individual activities. For the special night performances, look at the day's notice separately from regular viewing hours.
